Somewhat newbie here needs recorder suggestions-around chapters and copying

Found this site through a google search (thanks google!) and have been reading endless posts from all of you great members with endless amounts of very great info.

However, after reading the info I'm even more confused about what dvd recorder I should buy to accomplish my needs.

Here is what I'm looking to do:
1) I have a lot of old personal vhs tapes that I want to record to dvds. These are a lot of stuff I shot myself over the years - a lot of compilation stuff.

2) I want to be able to edit the recording to place chapter stops where I want them. I want there to be a chapter menu where I am able to change the image of the chapters as well as the names of them.

3) I want to be able to make copies of these finalized discs (most likely on my dvd burner on my computer)

4) I want the finished disc and any of the copies of that disc to be able to be watched - with the chapter stops that I placed - on any dvd player or computer.

5) I'd prefer to have the finished product be on dvd-r

So, I'm thinking I would need to get a dvdr that has a hard drive on it in order to do the editing- right? I've seen some great posts around the Toshiba and Panasonic models that have hard drives and editing capabilites but I'm not certain if they will do everything I'm looking to do above.

If I'm coming across as very naive here it's probably due to the fact that I've already got three dvd recorders (none of them have hard drives) - and I thought from the specs on two of them that they would do what I wanted.

However, of the two that allow editing, one allows it but only on dvd-ram -which I've tried and it's worked but I can't get it to play (or make a copy of) on any other player I have and the last one allows you to put chapter stops on dvd-r's but when you place the dvd-r back on any other player or computer the chapter stops aren't there! But when you put that disc back in the recorder the chapter stops are there!

Most of these machines were cheaper models- so I know that "you get what you pay for" - so I'm assuming I'll need to buy a more expensive model in order to get what I'm looking for. Unless there is a cheaper model out there that does what I need.

So- I'm looking to the great members on this site to point me in the right direction!

Is there a machine that will allow me to do what I want -and is fairly easy to use? (and isn't over $400?)

thanks in advance, Gil Benbrook

Point number 2 pushes you towards Toshiba. Specifically chapter menus with changeable thumbnails are for the most part unique to Toshiba. I would recommend the Toshiba XS series with a HDD.

You mentioned that you are able to do what you would like on a recorder using DVD-Ram. Is it a Toshiba?

I'm actually not sure what model it is (yeah, I'm that clueless!) I just know that I thought I would be able to do the chapter editing on dvd-r's but it only works on dvd-rams.

Instead of chapters, you could separate the pieces into titles and then give each of them a thumbnail picture and title which would show up in the titles menu of the disk. Panasonic DVD recorders will do this, and if you select the first title, it will play through all of the titles on a disk with only a very brief pause between "titles" (< 1 second). Toshiba makes some models that allow you to create disks with thumbnail photos for chapters.

Maybe you should look into some computer/software solutions if these do not flexible seem flexible enough. Stand-alone DVD recorders do not have the options that computer software programs do.

What do you do with Panasonic if you want 3 titles and under each title you would like 4 chapters. And the 12 resulting chapters have to have custom thumbnails? I believe only Toshiba will do something like this. I own Panasonic and Toshiba. I would choose Toshiba for this task.

Another option would be TMPGEnc DVD Author 2 for your computer (about $90). You would then be able to copy edited DVD-RAM to DVD-Rs that would play (chapter stops included) on any machine that plays DVD-R.

Good suggestion. But with a Toshiba you might finsih the project in less time than it would take to transfer the DVD-Ram to the PC.
