I thought I would relate my saga about resolving HD, digital-SD, and analog-SD PQ issues. The moral is - assume nothing you cannot see.
House is 20 years old and was probably wired originally by the then cable co or builder subcontractor.
I am A recent convert to HDTV via local cable co to a new family room TV and was having intermittent PQ problems WITH lack of certain HD channels. Did the usual checking, used RG6 patch cables from wall to DVR, etc. No dice.
Finally decided - with cable co help - to trace the wiring in the attic - attics, damn firewalls! No small fete, but worth it.
You have to visualize that the HD TV is about 50 cable feet or so from the cable input to the house. There's a 1GHz two-way splitter at the house entry point. Over the years the cable co added a powered 1GHz 10db drop amp for analog add-on TVs to the "kids" rooms on one of the split/drops (not exacly the best). The other split/drop...you would think... Heck no....the split/drop that goes to the HD TV in fact went to the master bedroom - it's a split bedroom plan - about 100 or so cable feet away and then BACK 100 cable feet or so to the HDTV. Think that is bad? Well...the splitter in the master bedroom attic was an old 500MHz deal. It made no sense!
Bottom line is we removed the splitter and relocated the cable to the HDTV back to the main input and for the time being have a three-way 1GHz splitter in place there. Next move is to relocate the 10db drop-amp - maybe eliminate it - and finalize the home run configuration.
But all PQs improved and the missing HD channels magically appeared.
Assume nothing - cheers.
Pete
