Have TV, Need Speakers

Hi all,

So after six months of vascillation, I went out and got myself a 56" Samsung TV. Now I'm putting into my living room my Yamaha receiver and Denon CD player (both about a decade old, but great condition).

But I need speakers.

My apartment is a small New York apartment. Living room is really too small to make surround sound a practical option... dimensions are probably 8' x 14' or so. And nowhere to snake the wires. So I'm thinking of just getting a couple of bookshelf or freestanding speakers. Any reccomendations in a pretty modest ($500/pair or under) price range?

I would look at the NHT classic 3s, at least give an audition. A buddy of mine just got some for strictly 2 channel listening, and they are a pretty impressive speaker. I've heard quite a few different bookshelves, and I would recommend these highly. Tight accurate bass, imaging and details are very accurate. They do more than they look like they should be able to, and the bass these little guys put out is more than would be expected, w/o sounding muddied, or boxy. A very well designed speaker.
JMO, and you will get many more, so I'll say what everyone else is thinking, go out and listen, but when you do, put these on your list somewhere. They are not real expensive, 4-500? And you should be able to get a 10-15% discount from your retailer.
Happy hunting.

Others to consider
Vienna Acoustics
Dynaudio
Paradigm
B @ W

There are obviously many more, and I have no idea what you have access to, but these would be some lines that I would be sure to have a listen to before purchasing anything.

Good Luck!

p.s.

Check audiogon prices and selection, your going to get much more for your money there, but you obviously wont be able to demo, so if there is something you have already heard and liked, it may just be available on audiogon.

I live in a hovel in the UWS, and my ascend 170se's are awesome!

I run them off an amp connected to my computer, and i really couldn't ask for better sound!

Thanks for the input. The NHT's look like they're pretty well regarded and have the same piano finish as my TV & entertainment center so that might be a good fit. Will find somewhere in Manhattan to give them a listen.

Did a fair amount of research, here and elsewhere, and ended up going with the Classic 3's which I got from ******* price-matching J&R (I would've bought from J&R but living in NY, ordering from ******* saved me NY sales tax).

Should be delivered Thursday.

Thanks for the help, guys!

i know it's a scandal but no, i didn't. i don't get away from the office until very late so i relied upon the reports and reviews of others. but given the universal praise for them, i found it inconceivable that i wouldn't like them. so found a good price and pulled the trigger.
