I downloaded Space Seed off of Xbox Live.

They did a weird thing.

The newly created space shots and the opening are in widescreen, while the rest of the show is OAR.

It's odd.

Any thoughts?

OAR doesn't refer to a specific size. It simply means the original aspect it was shot in.


4:3 can be OAR, for instance.

I downloaded the same show. I don't mind the new shots being 16:9. They look great and add a new flavor to the original series. It's like watching it for the first time all over again. Just be glad they didn't zoom or stretch the 4:3 parts.

I know, I was just surprised they did not make the new shots 4:3.

It seems kind of goofy to mix aspect ratios within the same show. I would think it would be kind of jarring (even subliminally) to go from 4x3 to 16x9, and ruins the integration I thought they were going for.

Maybe they're looking at eventually re-framing the original film elements to 16x9 eventually?

It wasn't too jarring. I'd have to say that it is no more jarring then 24 splitting the screen up 4 ways or more through out a show. I guess some Trekkie purist may not like it too much but, it is nice to see the original Enterprise in full 16:9 HD glory!

I tried an episode. It took forever to download (days). Kind of cool as a novelty but the HD detail made the old sets look kind of ridiculous. I won't be downloading anymore.
