Found a nice, inexpensive portable media drive that works great with the PS3

I have the 60GB PS3 but found it quickly filling up after adding a few demos, videos, music and pictures (with Linux it would only fill up that much faster). I was real tempted to upgrade the internal drive but came across this external one at Best Buy tonight:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1152837300414

With the 12% rewards discount this weekend, the price was under $100 out the door. In checking the website, it says it's on sale for $99 (from $149) so I'm not sure how long the 'sale' will be valid (whether until Midnight tonight, several weeks, or an "always on sale' price)

I was a bit skeptical of how well it would cooperate with the PS3. Some amazon reviews mention incompatability with apple Macbooks, the packaging lists compatability for Win 2000/XP/Apple OS.

Out of the box it worked perfectly with the PS3 and even seems as though it was designed for it.

It features the same glossy black finish as the PS3, uses the same cable (USB Mini-B, I believe its called) so you can easily unplug your PS3 controller and plug this in. It's also very compact (0.6" thick, 5.1" wide, 3.1" deep and 3.7oz in weight). It doesnt use an external power supply - the USB cable supplies power to it as well as transfers the data (for me, since I'm completely out of outlets and plan to use it at home on my PC and PS3 as well as at work on my laptop, this works out very nice).

Speed is also decent at 5400rpm. I did a test with my PC by transferring a 126MB video file and it copied completely in 6 seconds. Plugged it into the PS3 and it worked without a problem (streamed the 720p video without skipping, lagging or pixelating).

I havent had a lot of time to play around with it, but since it works great for me so far (plug and play on the PS3, PC and Laptop -- I havent tried the 360 yet, but the newest update allowing playback of wmv video from an external drive should work very nice with this) - I wanted to give anybody else looking for a similar solution a heads-up on it since I'm not sure how long it'll be on sale.

Amazon has it for a similar price. It's a nice unit. I use mine for taking backups of PC files and PS3.

thanks for the heads up, this seems like a good alternative to upgrading your internal.
