6.1 / 7.1 Lossless PCM support?

Which players can do this via HDMI and which players can't?

Can all players do it via HDMI? It is my understanding they all should be able to do this right?
Well I know personally the PS3 does. Especially since 7.1 channels shows up on my receiver while playing The Descent.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think that the Pioneer, PS3, BDP-S1 and panasonic all do 6.1/7.1 audio via HDMI.

I believe that the Samsung only does 5.1.

Thanks, I just wanted to confirm that I can't test this on my AVR properly.

All the players do it through HDMI. Only some do it through analog output.

Right... I think it might be in the specs. I can test it later by setting up my Samsung again.

That is what I thought but after some phone calls to Samsung on the BDP-1000 I was told by that particular tech rep that 5.1 was the most it could do. Analog (I know it only has 5.1 analog outs) or HDMI.

Of course those tech reps (for any company) usually know less than all of us forum members know. He could have been wrong.

Ok, checked it out. Samsung will NOT pass 6.1/7.1 PCM via HDMI.

Even though it doesn't affect me anymore (got rid of the Samsung) It is nice to know my information was correct.

Thanks for the info.

You tried Descent (6.1) on your Samsung? Does your A/V receiver support 6.1 through HDMI? Some older models do not.

Yes. I have no problem with the HDMI through the Panasonic BD player with my receiver.(Panasonic XR-700)

shamus,

Thanks, that is good to know. I assume you have the latest firmware on the Samsung?

Its just the one firmware right? If so yes.
Im a little surprised myself that it wouldnt play 6.1/7.1. PCM via HDMI.
IMHO this player is ideal for someone who is going directly to a TV and not using any kind of sound system.

I am surprised too. But I did know going in that advanced audio support or lack there of, was the biggest rap on the player. I'm not really bummed about it or anything, I was just asked to test 7.1 LPCM to my AVR, and I can't really test it.

Does anybody have any speculation as to what it (the samsung BD-P1000) actually does when you select the track? Does it just omit the 6th and/or 7th channels and give you the 5.1 channels only? I mean it did sound a little different, but also gave me strong surround performance, I was just concerned it was no longer accurate sound performance.

M-CH 5.1 + EX PCM did show up on the display of my AVR when I selected the 6.1 track from the disc menu. I still can't figure out why I could not selelct it the first night I tried it on the player at all, but I tried it the next day and had no trouble selecting the track.

Being ever hopefull, any chance this could be enabled in a Firmware update? I suspect there is some fundemental issue with this if the player only has 5.1 analog output.

I am wondering the same thing? Does the Samsung fold the 6th channel into the left/right surrounds or just drop it. If it drops it, then I would have no choice but to select the standard DD EX track. Bummer.

However, I am not sure how one would test it and you certainly cannot count on Samsung support for an accurate answer.

I should be able to test it once we get more 7.1 movies out there. The problem with The Descent is I couldnt find anything discrete enough(like a voice etc... just water drips and crumbling rocks) coming out of the rears to see if its put back in. If anyone can find a discrete enough sound coming out of the rears, I will gladly plug the Samsung back in to test.

I have the Sammy player going to my Pio Elite 74TXVi with HDMI and have not noticed 6.1 or 7.1 lighting up at all. Can anyone tell me a dsic that should be 6.1 or 7.1?

Descent is the first and still only title to provide LPCM beyond 5.1.......
Edit: Should have read: "Descent is the first and still only title to provide LPCM beyond 5.1 I am aware of......."

I liked the movie a lot, really quite a different take on a horror theme. It was freaky enough in DD 5.1 EX..

Ooops. Be careful, my friend. Eightninesuited will be over you and woopin' your behind (like he did to me) for this mistake. Descent isn't the first or only greater than 5.1 PCM disk.

What other titles were released with LPCM 6.1/7.1 in N. America?

I know there are one or two other 6.1/7.1 releases in Japan.

I tried a search and did not come up with any others. Please do tell. My statement should of read...

"Descent is the first and still only title to provide LPCM beyond 5.1 I am aware of".......
