Is Harmony a difficult learner?

Got a Harmony 550 last night after getting some suggestions from this forum. After spending a few hours trying to program it I am still having a hard time getting 550 to learn any IR command. The 550 would struggle for more than half a minute before it "detect the key". And it didn't seem to work with the device (Monoprice 5X1 HDMI switcher) when later tested. Is it normal for Harmony to take such a long time to learn an IR key? Does the learning feature on Harmony work well at all or my remote may be defective? BTW I ensured that all batteries were brand new. Any advice would be much appreciated.

I found that if you hold the key (old remote) down too long it won't register. Touch it real quick and the Harmony picks it up.
