Xmas money to spend

I currently have no subwoofer in my HT. The amp is a Denon avr-787 and the main speakers are B&W DM-220 (20 years old) with two 8" woofers. Bass is not bad. I am wondering if it is worth it to buy a sub. I dont want to spend more than 400 cd$. There is a Velodyne DSP-10 at 399 this week at Future Shop.
My room is small 11 x 13 feet and the ceiling is low (65 feet). I want your opinion.

Thanks

How much Xmax do you want for your Xmas money?

I would look for a 12 to offset those 8's...

HSU has a 12 for $499.

Svs only has a 10" in that price range.. in a box subwoofer... PB12-NSD

but for $50. more you could get a 25-31PCi Subwoofer

All very good products...

WOW! Your ceiling is 65'? Do you live in a lighthouse or something? You're going to need at least a dozen SVS PB12-Ultra/2's stacked on each other in order to fill a space that big.

ok. 6'5"

Now can i have serious advice?

Bottom line, you always need a sub. It will hit frequencies lower than your mains. you should cut the frequencies at about 80 htz and redirect the rest of the bass to the sub. This will also make your mains sound better because they wont have to work as hard.

My 2 cents...

Your best bet from a value standpoint is probably to look at some of the Canadian brands Mirage, Paradigm etc so as to avoid the markup caused by going north of the border...

The size of the driver isn't necesarily the most important factor.

The only HSU sub that meets his budget is the STF-1 at $399 (CDN).

I believe you mean the PB10-NSD.

It is $579 in Canada.

The cheapest cylinder for them is the 20-39PCi at $759 (CDN).

If your willing to wait on one, get an eD sub, 12" driver, for $350 http://www.edesignaudio.com/edv2/pro...roducts_id=407

Another alternative...if you are pretty happy with the bass you are getting...
With your room size being so small, I'd look into doing a shaker setup. This will get you the physical impact of a sub that is WAY out of your price range and will fit into your budget range. You can pick up a Buttkicker setup for your price.

So only 1 people thinks the Velodyne is good enough?

One option to consider is DIY.

You just need to fit the following criteria:
-Motivation and time to plan out your design.
-Motivation and time to actually build it... this is what holds most back from DIY
-Some simple tools and woodworking skills... or a neighbor with these tools and skills.
-That you and/or your spouse can live with a larger than commercial sized enclosure for the sub.

DIY subs very often run laps around subs of the same cost and subs costing MANY times more.

The velodynes are very good subs.

I recently received the new HSU VTF 1 that I really like. My room is 12 x 15 X 8. The sub is more than I need, very musical, and capable of shaking the house for HT. It ran about $409 (USD) delivered. For a small room, and less money, you might want to consider Onix's X-Sub at $199. Good luck!
