Please help a sub newbie out

What causes the woofer to flap and rattle when it plays super loud?

Is this bad for the speaker? Should I turn it down enough so it cannot EVER happen, or just low enough so it only happens when the bass gets VERY loud? Or does it not matter, and the flapping sound is just annoying? Please help. I cannot seem to find that answer to this ANYWHERE.

If your sub is ported, chances are that sound is the driver unloading below tuning, or running out of excursion and bottoming. Not good for the sub, either way. What is the sub, by the way?

Yeah, it's ported. Velodyne VRP1000

The reason I want to know is that I really can't turn this thing up very loud without this happening. I thought it was becuase my previous one was a defective open-box one, but I exchanged it for a brand-new one, and it is the same way.

BTW, this is a tiny room(bedroom). Only about 1000 cu ft. I figured this should be plenty, but now I don't know.

Maybe you're cranking the sub way over it's potential, thus choking the sub. Turn that volume down a notch.

It's not that high. 0db(50%) on the reciever, 9 o'clock(25%) on the sub gain.

Invest 40 bucks in a Radio Shack sound level meter. Most folks who have never calibrated their system have the sub waaaay too loud. If you've bottomed it repeatedly, it may very well be damaged.

Also, please check to make sure your "bass" is not cranked up. keep it at the 0 position. and if your reciever has a "bass boost" make sure it's not on!!

Is there any reason to get the RadioShack sourced SPL meter over the similarly priced Galaxy CM130?

The only problem I see with the CM130 is the frequency range with 125Hz at the low end. There isn't a posted FR for the RS, but I know it measures much lower than 125.

No, I just got the replacement today for the messed-up-on-many levels open-box one. It's only been bottomed out a few times. I've recalibrated so it won't happpen again.

I'll be getting an SPL meter in the near future. Just a question: Why do a lot of people say to get the analog one instead of the digital? The digital one seems more appealing to me.

If you can still get the analog one, it is cheaper. Analog gages are easier to read in a dynamic measurement. Digital displays have a latency that makes them hard to read until they stabilize and it is easy to read a moving analog gage. From what I understand, the digital RS meter is more accurate below 20Hz than the analog is. I have the analog version.
