SVS /2 Questions...

Man, I should have never found this forum, its going to turn out badly for my savings account... now on to the question at hand...

I was originally looking at getting an SVS PB12-plus to use in my home theater setup. The more I read, however, I'm beginning to think it will not reach to where I want to be. In my younger days when I didn't have very good common sense (yeah, I know, not much has changed!), I removed the rear seating in my Z28, and shoehorned 4 pro grade 18" subs in there with a true 1000 watt amp - I like to really feel it. The HT room I'm trying to fill is around 5500 ft^3, and I'm convinced I'll need the plus/2 to achieve the affect (or is it effect?) that I'm desiring. But then I start to wonder if perhaps I should go all out and just get the ultra/2.

I guess my question is has anyone made a close comparison between the plus/2 and the ultra/2? Is there significantly more headroom? Is the bass more musical, tighter or deeper? I probably will be using it for equal parts music and movies, if not perhaps more for music (all types, but I have an affinity for jazz, and I like good tight bass in my jazz).

Guess I'm just looking for justification for that extra $700.

Thanks,
TG

SVS is unveiling the new 13+" Ultra tomorrow at CES. So as they say, let's see what tomorrow brings

I'm with g. If you can be patient, see what the new Ultra is all about. From Ed Mullen's reports, a single new Ultra may get you all you want for SPL and SQ.

This is totally my opinion, so take it for what it's worth. I own a PB12-Plus/2 and my father an Ultra/2 and in terms of output there is NO difference between the two. Of course these subs are in two different houses which is a HUGE factor, but volume wise they are very similar. The Ultra/2 certainly is a little more accurate but in no way worth the $700-$800 additional price tag IMO. My Plus/2 achieves as good SPL though without question.

I think that anyone considering an Ultra/2 should likely go with two HSU VTF-3 HO's with turbos. I don't know if anyone has ever done a side by side test of an Ultra/2 verses a pair of turbo VTF-3 HO's, but the cost is EXACTLY the same for either setup and I'd put my money on the two VTF-3 HO's to dig lower and output more SPL.

You will most definitely need more than just the PB12-Plus. Slightly smaller dual subs will serve you even better than one larger one. I like the HSU suggestion given above. I'd put my money on two of them vs. a single Ultra/2.

BTW, I have dual PB12 +/2 s in 3300 cu. ft. One is sufficient. Two simply kills!
