480p is a resolution like 720p or 1080i. It was used by FOX before they went with 720p. Its also the common output of DVD players.

aka EDTV

EDTV= Enhanced-Resolution TV. It's not as good as either 720p or 1080i, which are generally called HDTV (High Definition TV.)

The "common" output of most DVD players is 480i, also know as SDTV (Standard Definition TV, which is the same as over-the-air analog TV) and not 480p. Most TVs can show 480i, while newer flat-panel TVs are needed for 480p.

480p is also known as Progressive Scan. HDTV's (intergrated and monitors) and so called EDTV's can display this. Most modern DVD players can output 480p NTSC. There were also (briefly) a class of TV's known "Progressive Scan TV's" in the late 1990's/early 2000's before HDTV got more popular that could display 480p but not 720p and higher.
