Will Bluray see niche market releases?

My biggest gripe right now is there is no niche market release for bluray.

Example being:

Anime
Home Theater Calibration discs
etc.

How long do you think it will be before we see these niche markets expand? I definitely would love to see a Howl's Moving Castle over on bluray.

I would think you will be able to find Anime soon if not already via Japanese/Asian imports which is the same region code as North America. I also think we will see Calibration discs by mid 2007.

If niche you mean small volume releases, then I'm sure there will be.
Already someone is hedging his bets at pressing small volume release for those who want it. Of course, there is a dig there at HD-DVD somewhere... Hey! Don't kill the messenger!

There was a serious lack of classic films (something from the 1970's and back) in the latest announcements of BD releases, which is a shame because Fox and Disney have some great old films. It might not mean much for the whipper snapper kids today with their loud rock'n'roll DTS-MA decoding sound systems and stuff, but a few of us film buffs would like to see BD give the classics the same treatment HD-DVD (and Warner) has been giving to the old stuff.

I agree completely. The thing I keep telling myself though is, the sooner they get those out, the sooner they can get to other titles.

Don't get me wrong; I do like some of the new films with action and surround sound. It's just that I'd like some more variety.

On the topic of calibration...

I just got terminator 2 and it has the optimode test patterns on it.

And Sony discs also have video test patterns hidden on them as easter eggs.

I'm -almost- sure Digital Video Essentials will be released soon on Blu Ray if it hasn't been released already (I didn't check.)

I know what you mean, some of the earliest DVD's were very niche! Precisely because it was new, niche titles were produced because they had less competition

I would think that the big announcements from the BD studios are a way to validate the claim that Blu-ray is here to stay. For smaller companies and indies, investing in HD is certainly a heavy and risky undertaking, and they will need to be reassured that the installed base is going up.

What Sony and the BDA need to do now, is to meet those guys and offer them a way to subsidize costs that compares to HD-DVD and tell them that they will simply achieve more sales.

not now, but next year for sure... Sony itself is just getting to producing new BD discs properly and in volume...

For small studios, it is definetly not worth it, until:
1. Price goes down
2. More players are on the market...
