Official Philips 47" 1080p LCD 47PF9441D Thread - Page 31

I got my TV delivered at 6am this morning. Yes, they were working that early. I've got it set up and it looks nice. I'm still learning the controls and the settings. I followed karlw2000's lead and disabled all the fancy settings for now.

I have several questions. On my 37" vizio, when I press INFO, I can see the stations signal whether it is 480, 720 or 1080, I don't see how to find this on the Philips. All my stations are OTA HD antenna.

Also, is there a way to see signal strength? I only saw it when trying to tune in a station that the Vizio picked up and the Philips didn't. But it wasn't very informative. I've heard of some sets listing exact strength of each station's signal. Can the Philips do this? My vizio can't.

My Vizio can tune in several smaller stations that the Philips can't and these are stations my kids like. I'm bummed. I had hoped a TV that cost $1000 more would do a better job of tuning. I hope that my new HTPC can get those stations and then it won't be a problem.

glmason, glad to hear you got your TV. I also didn't see any good information on the TV channels like input type (720p, 1080i, 480i) nor the signal strength. Definitely disappointing compared to my little 32" Sceptre LCD with QAM. The 'info' button does give the input resolution on component and HDMI. I did get every channel that my other QAM TV's get. Maybe directly type in the channel and see what happens. I haven't figured out how to directly input digital channels like 117.2 as the remote doesn't have the '.' or '-' like my cheap Sceptre does. If I did input '117', it would go to the first digital channel available.

There is a "." button next to the "0" button.

I'm only using OTA HD. I get all my stations in HD so I don't need to tune in any SD. I think the quality is very good. I live in Orlando and we get 1080 broadcasts on the major networks all day.

When my husband gets home I will have him carry out the Vizio 37" to compare. We have been happy with it and it was rately highly back in the Fall. But I'm sure we'll see a big improvement. It's just hard to tell when they aren't side by side.

I am not a videophile (sp) by any means. But so far I am happy. I won't get my computer hooked up until next week when I get my hdmi cable. So I can't comment on that yet.

The TV looks HUGE because of the bezel and speakers at the bottom. I wish they would have without that extra 1" on each side edge. It also would be nice if the TV would rotate a few degrees on the stand. It is very heavy.

I'd like to hear some of the settings people are using.
My initial settings are:
Contrast: 43
Brightness: 40
Color: 57
Tint: 0
Sharp: 2
Color Temp: Normal
Pixel Plus: On (I couldn't tell much difference yet)
The rest off - dynamic contrast, MPEG... )

We finally jumped off the fence and ordered it. Either way the Vizio is going back, we just didn't want to go through buyers remorse again! From all of the reviews so far, sounds like a better picture overall. Thanks for all input!!! ( :

Ordered mine on 2/6 it was picked up on 2/8 now sitting somewhere in Indiana since 2/15. Called home direct and they told me that I should expect it on 3/5. I think it's a record!! 20 days??? how about a month for delivery??? If I've known that I'd think again about ordering it .

I'm 30 miles southwest of Chicago. It will probably take just as long for us, unless it's quicker to ship near Chicago? Can only hope! (Just like with the Bears next year )

My Philips has arrived in Charlotte, but the delivery company will not be delivering it today, don't deliver at the weekend and will not let us pick it up.

Guess we have to wait until next week.

Delivery update...ordered the morning of 1/29 and was delivered last night (2/15) at 7:00PM (possibly the two longest weeks of my life). After a few quality hours at night and in daylight I am completely satisfied with the P47. Unfortunately I am only viewing DirecTV SD right now (S video output) because I need my contract to expire so I can switch to Dish HD (more channels). Next on the list is a Terk HDTVi to see if I can get some immediate OTA HD gratification.

That said I think the SD PQ is better than anything/everything I have seen in this price range (usually displaying HD). The colors and tones are balanced, the blacks are rich and complete and I have not seen any banding or ghosting yet...still looking for the Mac commercial. I would also add that if you have a bright room, this LCD is a HUGE improvement over tube, or I assume even plasma. Seeing my mirror-like reflection in the old Toshiba 36" CRT I replaced was like looking into the past. Glad those days are gone. For those of you with concern about the cabinet itself; my wife almost passed out when she saw the size of the thing, but that means it's perfect! I like the matted finish much more than the piano finished TVs, such as the Samsungs.

I also put in The Matrix last night (Sony non-upconverting, progressive scan DVD with component output) and after finding the right aspect ratio - Movie expand 16:9 - was VERY happy with the picture quality. The Automatic picture setting is great for TV, but for DVD was a little vertically distorted. The equipment used to film is obvious with this display. Survivor, while good, was slightly pixelated compared to CSI, no doubt. The beach in Fiji is not exactly a movie studio. CSI is such a dark show, I thought the default Brightness setting was a little low and after bumping it up had deep black with detail within it and I was very impressed by that. I think display settings are personal preference so will not include specifics.

Good luck to everyone still waiting, it will be worth it!

Can anyone tell me if the speakers are removable. If so, what are the measurements after removal.

Thanks for your help

Nope. Not removable.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who thinks the PQ is excellent on this TV. I can't say I'm a video expert, but I've had so many HDTV's (5) that I know what *I* like and I'm so 'blown away' by this set. I was HD channel surfing last night and couldn't believe how sharp each of the HD channels were on the later shows between 9 and 11pm. I don't even bother to calibrate my sets...I just mess around with the settings until I like what I see.

BTW I don't like the automatic format feature. This will automatically expand the picture so there are no black bars. First of all, I like OAR (original aspect ratio) so I prefer the black bars, and second, sometimes the TV will zoom even a widescreen show when it wasn't supposed to. I like to manually set the format. When watching HD, the format is always 16:9 and the black bars will be included in the picture.

Arghh !

My timeline:

Ordered: 2/9
Order confirmed: 2/12
Home Direct 'Pickup': 2/12
Home Direct 'Load': 2/16

I'm assuming the 'Load' status means it's just about to hit to road from Mira Loma to Portland.

I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that I see the set sometime late next week.

WOW! you almost pushed me off the fence! So impressive!

do you have a pc to try on it? I read several posts here mentioned this TV is not good as a pc monitor, but some other said it displays 1920x1080..... more info please!

Internal power supply. In fact, this TV must not use too much power as the power cord is one of those skinny cords that usually go from the wall to the power brick on laptop computers. I don't hear any sound even if I have the TV on mute.

I got the TV this morning and been trying to set it up since evening. I got the DVI->HDMI connected and the HD channels (PQ) is great, but how do I set up audio? I get the audio if I use component cables from the 'cable box component' to TV but not 'cable box DVI' ->HDMI. Should I have to connect audio differently(separately)?. Please help. Thx.

DVI doesn't pass audio, so you will need to hook up audio separately.

If you use the DVI/HDMI cable, then you will need to connect the digital audio from your cable box to the digital audio input. I haven't tried, but someone wrote you then configure the digital audio to the HDMI port you are using.

I just received my TV today after ordering it on the 2nd. I have been following this forum since it started and wanted to thank everyone for their comments and reviews. This is my first HD TV, so I am seriously behind on the technology. My best input source is through component cables from an older Samsung DVD player. Tomorrow I plan on buying an upconverting player and an OTA antenna to see if I can get lucky with some free HD channels. Does anyone have any suggestions on brands or places to buy? I would definitely like to keep it fairly affordable and would never buy a Blu-ray until they are at least under $400.

I would probably be the last person to ask about PQ, but so far I am very satisfied with even the SD programming. I am especially happy that stretching the picture to 16:9 format does not seem to look strange at all. If I didn't know better, I probably wouldn't be able to tell. I would also like to agree with earlier posters that the matte finish looks quite nice.

Quick synopsis: currently only have SD via old crt-tv's w/service from DirecTV. I've ordered the phillips 47", a Terk OTA antenna, and am upgrading to DirecTV's HD service with an HDDVR.

Anyone know if I need to order any additional cables ? I am assuming the OTA antenna will just connect through the coax connector, right ? Anyone know what cables DirecTV will set me up with using the HDDVR ?

Thanks in advance.
The HR-20 HDDVR will come with component video cables and not an HDMI cable. Monoprice as others have stated is a good affordable place for cables. You can use the OTA directly to the TV for watching and get several channels depending on your area with good quality. You can also feed the coax from the OTA directly into your HR-20. I have it set up this way and it seems I get the same selection of channels. This setup allows the HR-20 to record the channels you receive from the OTA antenna. I am in San Diego and sometimes find the NBC OTA picture is clearer than Directv. I have to put in a call to Directv because my sat setup says I am not getting a signal from one of the antennas, I don't know if this is interfering with local reception or what. Overall I still have been impressed with PQ. I have found the sound is not as good on the OTA v. Directv.

Happy viewing and tweaking! Glad to see more of you are getting your sets as I was fortunate to live in SoCal which allowed me to get my set a couple weeks ago.

Jaycozer,

Would you recommend using the component cables that come with the HD-DVR or buying and using the HDMI cable ?

Go way BACK and you can see you CANNOT get 1080p input using a PS3.

I've decided to wall mount this TV. There are 3 rows of screw holes. I would think from a stability point of view, the top row would be best so the TV 'hangs', but maybe the 2nd row might work as well. Any ideas?
This is my first post, but I've been following this thread since the beginning. I immensely appreciate the great info that you all have made available. I pulled the trigger on Super Bowl Sunday, and received the set yesterday. This is my first HD set, so I'm not that tech savvy, however I've appreciated HD with friends and family for awhile.

First impressions:

This thing is huge! Substantial casing, but it looks classy.

HD through Comcast is beautiful. PQ IMO is exceptional. The blacks seem rich, deep, and true. Settings might take me awhile to dial in perfectly, but all in all I'm very pleased.

Watched Crank (with that Transporter guy) on Blue Ray w/ PS3:
Totally jaw dropping... phenomenal.

Played Ridge Racer 7, Resistance F.O.M., Call of Duty, and Madden 07 (all via 1080I HDMI), and I really couldn't imagine a better picture and gaming experience. I think the whole "true 1080p" thing will not make an appreciable difference to me.

One thing I find annoying is a single stuck blue pixel... however it's a big set(maybe to be expected??)although it's sub-optimal, it is unnoticeable @ viewing distance. We'll see...

One question: Has anybody had problems/successes with the USB update process? I tried with the original memory stick and nothing seemed to happen. Then I downloaded the update from Philips, re-updated the stick, and still the TV seemed not to recognize it. The directions that came with the stick seem to conflict with the directions provided on Philips' website. Hmmm.

Also how can I do the Pixel Plus 1/2 and 1/2 demo? Am I just totally missing something?

Overall I'm totally stoked on this set, pixel and update probs aside, I hope the honeymoon lasts a good while.

Cheers,
-Z-

IMO if you have the option to use HDMI, use it. That ONE single cable is so much easier than 5 cables (3 for color, 2 for audio) for component. Plus it hangs from the bottom rather than protrude outward from the back.
Hello all, I have a question or two. I plan on mounting the TV above the fireplace (not in use) and connect the DVD and cable box using the HDMI cables. I run them to my Onkyo receiver and one cord in the wall to the TV (25 foot monoprice HDMI cable). Question is, On ocassion I'll hook up a Playstation 2 and mess around. How hard would it be with the TV hanging on the wall to get to the component cables and plug them in? Are the plugs facing down? How much room is between the wall and TV? Thanks for any help or advise.
