"View First Unread" Problem

Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? I subscribe to several threads. When I try to use the View First Unread button, it jumps to the end (but not always the very end of the thread). It does NOT jump to the last message I read...and I always read to the end of the thread.

For example, say there are 10 messages on the thread. I read all 10 messages. I leave and come back the next day and there are 20 messages on the thread. When I click on the View First Unread, it will jump to something like the 16th message. Shouldn't the View First Unread take me to the 11th message?

Any idea what I could be doing wrong? It's frustrating because sometimes the feature works but most of the time it doesn't. Again, I always read to the end of the thread...so I don't know how it determines the seemingly random point it starts at.

Hi..

Where it jumps to is based on the time stamp of your last visit. Once you come back to the site, within 20 min that timer is reset. So even if you come to the site all all, anywhere to the site, the time stamp is reset.

I know it is not right, but sorry to say nothing can be done for it currently.

Ok, that explains why it doesn't work the way that I would expect it. Sometimes I don't read all the threads that I'm subscribed to and the 'one timer' would explain it.

Thanks for the explanation, David. I've been wondering the same thing myself for a couple of years.

Does this explain why many threads that I have previously viewed no longer show the "View First Un-read" option the next time I visit them even though there are additional messages that I have not viewed.

This seems to be a hit or miss problem. Even with the same thread, sometime it works and other times the option is not shown.

Yes, if you come back and forth to the site it cam make for such issues I am sorry to say.

Is it just me or did something change recently with the View First Unread feature? Now whenever I come to the site and click on the View First Unread link, it always takes me to the LAST message in the thread. I then have to scroll back up to find where I left off the previous time I visited the site. As I mentioned when starting this thread, I always read all of my subscribed threads at every visit...so I don't know why it's just started doing this recently.

Nothing changed...sound's like a cookie issue.

See this post from another forum about the issue and what you can do to try to help it...

Hopefully this is related. I keep shortcuts to favorite threads, but they take me to the first page. Is there a generic shortcut that will take me to the current last post, or even just the last page, without having to know the specific post number? Thx much.

If you added in a LASTPOST tag in the url, it may do what you are looking for. Here is what it looks like for this thread. The t= is the thread ID number.

Code:

I guess I don't have permission to view that page.

Sorry....Need to be a member of the site to view that one. Here is a copy of the note from Doug...

This is a problem I've reported several times myself. It's related to how vBulletin stores info about previously visited threads in a temporary cookie. There's a maximum size limit on the data stored in a cookie and once that's reached it fails to add info about any new threads.

Since vBulletin uses temporary cookies, they'd get reset if you completely close all instances of the browser and restart it. But if you rarely completely close all browser windows, the cookie is never reset.

vBulletin should minimally detect the max size and start throwing away the oldest previously visited threads, or perhaps should reset the cookie completely when the regular session has timed out and a new one is created... or find a better way to store this info instead of in a cookie.

With Firefox, you can delete the cookie... look under tivocommunity.com, tcthread_lastview and just remove that one cookie.

Tools / Options / Privacy / Cookies / View Cookies

Also because it's a temporary cookie rather than a permanent one with an expiration date, I believe the usual "Clear all cookies" function won't actually delete it, either.

David,

Thanks for posting the information about the temporary cookies. That makes sense as I see the problem on my work computer (which I rarely ever need to reboot). I always have a browser open so the cookies are never purged. I'm a web developer and use this type of cookie a lot myself!

That "lastpost" tag doesn't work for me anymore. It just drops me to the first page in the thread, not the last page. Any ideas? Thanks.

FYI I think this works:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...9&goto=newpost

It's the link I receive in email notifications of newposts, and I think it will work as a bookmark\\links-bar shortcut to the end of a thread. I'll try it out.
