RCA speaker input

hi all,

I have a turntable and an ipod that I want to connect to some 2.0 studio monitors, seen here. The speakers have RCA inputs. I think I need a receiver or something, and I am willing to spend around $200-300, and I think it's pretty obvious I have no idea what I'm doing. I can use an adapter to make the ipod transmit over the radio, if that helps. Can anyone help me?

what you need is a preamp with a phono stage.

ipod/TT > preamp > powered speakers

The good news is that there are a ton of used (and new) preamps ranging from $100 to thousands. If used, I would check Audiogon.com I used one of those transmit over FM gadgets and they affect the sound quality significantly. In otherwords stay away from them.

Parsound's zpre2 pre-amp and zphono phono stage in total would set you back $300 - $400. If you download their respective manuals it will explain why you need a phono stage and a pre-amp.
good luck

Thanks guys. I think I will go for that equipment. One more question, do I need some quality cables or will radio shack ones do?

There are some refurb Z phono stages at AudioAdvisor now but didn't seen any refurb ie cheaper Zpreamps. It will cost you over $500 for the combo. I feel new Z series equipment is overkill for your requirements. If you are space constricted then the Z stuff is fantastic. BTW I own two Zamps a series 1 and series 3 (current). I still think the best route is a cheapo but decent used preamp. You can then have a one box solution. If you look on Audiogon there are many $100 - $200 preamps with phono stages some even with built tuners (some adcoms etc)

Some stereo amplifiers come with a phono input like my HK3480, eliminating the need for a preamp.

The only catch is that he is using powered speakers and thus does not need the power amp stage.

The iPod should connect easily with a headphone-to-RCA adapter.

I would assume the speakers will contain the appropriate adapter as they're made for connecting to a computer's speaker output jack.

Connecting a turntable is a whole other issue and will require some sort of phono-stage pre-amp.
