Like svsneo says, many receivers use cheap processing to put an OSD up on HDMI, but they disable the video input so as not to degrade it.
All I want is a good receiver that when it has a HDMI input and outputting via HDMI will display the volume on-screen when the level is changed via the remote. I have looked at several high end receivers (Pioneer, Yamaha, Denon) and so far most will do what I want using the component inputs but none if inputed and outputted via HDMI wtf.
The reason you don't see this feature is simple -- without a high quality video processor, such overlay will degrade the quality of the picture. In order to overlay a volume control over high-definition content without degrading the picture, you would need a video processor from the likes of Gennum or Silicon Optix. At the moment, we don't have any consumer processors with this feature.
Denon is expected to unveil the first HDMI (1.3) receivers with this technology in a few months. You can expect an on-screen OSD and volume controls from these receivers.
