Chew On This.

Am I the only one who thinks that there is something wrong with the BDA announcing movie launches and reaffirming studio support that we all knew that they already had during CES 2007???

This is a CE event, not a movie software event...YET NOT ONE NEW INNOVATION OR CE SURPRISE?

Take the fanboy hats off for a moment and think about it:
All the CE support and movie studio support is not going to give BR the victory if they can't break into the J6P price market that DVD players were able to.

Who is going to buy all of these movies, or better yet continue to release them with most players at or above $600? Just we the AV fans and the well-to-do. And we are only about 10% of the market!

Whomever brings to market the cheapest players, that are close to DVD players in price first, will eventually win this war! HD DVD has proved that it is not the amount of CE companies or studio support on your side that allows you to stay in a fight, it is having an affordable player.

I say again, whomever gets $250 players to the market fastest, is going to win this war and take all the spoils of war.

Stop the trolling! For crying out loud! Post this on the hddvd forum PLEASE.

And this is a really pathetic troll. Yeah yeah, it sucks when a format in a format war unleashes a ton of new titles. Sucks for the other side.
Is this why people go to CES? to get a release schedule for movies! I am not disputing that this is a good thing, but where was the exciting new BD hardware and innovations on display ? So, why is asking these questions being a troll? I guess thinking beyond PR announcements is not something we like to do....well.....

Excuse me, but there were a lot of new players announced. BD200 down the road.. What more do you really want on the hardware side? The PS3 is a great player and a lot of the BD players just came out last month.
Didn't another BD player get delayed??? I thought I read that somewhere but can't find it anymore....was it the Pioneer?
I was thinking on the lines of :

- lower priced standalone players
- Demo of BD Live
- Players with advanced audio codec support

Toshiba has announced 3 G2 players that cater to different levels of users at different price points. They announced work on a new TL disk. That showed to be that they were putting a lot of money into HD DVD R&D and putting their money where their mouth is. Talk is cheap....

There were also HD DVD demos of new movie features. Nothing of the sort for BD.

Guys, examine the facts. See what's going on and then decide who you think is having a better show. Studios putting out a long list of movies is not why people go to CES. It's a good thing, but using CES for this indicates that they have litle else going on in terms of product development etc.

R&D = strategic, Movie release schedule = tactical. Again, I am not saying releasing titles is a bad thing, but look beyond that....

The new Samsung has a lower price.

I admit, it would've been nice to see BD Live or some advanced audio.

However, we got something far better. Lots of software to use. I guess I'm more used to computer expos, where people are interested in both software and hardware.

You must be used to car shows.

Actually I work in software and announcing a long list of movie titles from an existing catalog is not the type of software I had in mind....

In that case, studios should be announcing new DVD titles at CES to show how much progress is going on in that format.

FWIW, I've never been to an auto show. But many computer shows
post #9 of 18
Yeah... features are nothing to me if there isn't the software there to use it.
It really must drive you nuts that the software was such a huge thing this year. Personally, I'm thrilled by the news. I'm format neutral, but I'm betting on BD in the long run.

What Happened to Philips?
Weren't they the #2 behind Sony for Blu-Ray support.
I thought that they would announce at least 1 2nd gen player, but nothing, not even a hind.

this forum is quickly becoming a joke in these HD areas, the mods are doing all they can do, there is no way 100 mods could keep up with this amount of trash being posted, people need to grow up and get back to reality

there is no war because no one cares outside 1 or 2% of the population

Its content that will win this format war not the cheapest player...whats the point in having the cheapest player when your favorite movie is on Blu-ray!

And also lets put this into perspective the value of the average software collection is way above the value of the hardware.

Why did i choose blu-ray ? because 90% of my movies will be on it. Will i ever consider HD-DVD...yes when there is software that is exclusive and i absolutely must have it. Although now with LG setting the precedence.....i think this whole format war nonsense will be over within 2 years as combo players take a foothold....just remember DVD-Audio/SACD, DVD-R, DVD+R etc

Personally i think time is running out for HD-DVD/Blu-ray if they can't kiss and make up....IPTV and downloadable movies/TV is coming and will be widespread within 5 years with some form of new Apple IPOD device.

J6P won't care about HD quality if just like inferior MP3s he is happy with SD quality which is cheap and downloadable from the Net

This is getting ridiculous. This place is almost unbearable at this point.

First of all, to sit and argue about formats that only play on TVs that the majority of the country DOESN'T OWN is retarded. This so-called "war" will be going on for a long time because of that very reason. Just enjoy whatever player you have and stop with the conspiracies, speculation, and the rest of the nonsense!

I thought PC and Apple fanboys were the worst. You people take the cake.

Plazman, what are you thinking? Blu Ray is doing great and using CES to further sell it..Is that so surprising? Sony sees software studio partnership a key and they used the CES forum to reinforce that point. emphatically! Are you kidding me, this is a PR persons dream forum? Every news outlet in the world is their at CES. It gives these manufactuers one time a year to pull out all the stops and tell the world about how great their products are and how well supported they are by the vitally important studios (and in this case how they will destroy the competition in terms of features and software).

I am baffled that you are surprised by the fact that Sony used the event to sell their biggest electronics product in 10 years.... I suppose they were the only ones.....

Toshiba announces players from Onkyo and Meridian whose players will no doubt arrive in HD DVD's last days when they are choking on lack of A-list films. Not much of anything hopeful ftom HD DVD at CES.

Come on, have a drink! It's time to celebrate Blu ray!!!!

I love these arguements. "CES is a hardware show so software announcements are a sign of desperation". Funny, I don't remember anyone saying that last year when HD DVD announced way more titles than they actually shipped!

CES is the place for new information about the formats, there isn't a software show. On top of that Sony announced two players, LG one, Samsung one and Sharp one. HP announced a PC drive as did LG and Pioneer

TDK announced 200gb Blu-ray discs as well as mini-BD's

I guess BDA declaring itself the winner was the big news. Followed by Fox's projection of sales based on their research....
