Blu-ray Software Sales Surpass HD-DVD

I didn't see this posted and found it interesting and deserving of a thread. It is filled with PR but the numbers are interesing none the less.

"Blu-ray software sales have now surpassed HD-DVD for the first time the week of December 24 and they did so by an impressive 20 percent. The sales gap is expected to widen further in 2007 based on research conducted by Twentieth Century Fox and Blu-ray is expected to outsell HD-DVD by a 3.5-to-1 ratio by the end of the first quarter.

One of the driving factors behind the growth in sales is the PlayStation 3 (PS3), which was launched on November 17, 2006 in North America. The PS3 has been selling out at retail outlets since it was launched and despite shortages Sony has been able to meet its target of shipping 1 million PS3s in North America by the end of 2006. What's even more impressive is that they did it faster than their top-selling PlayStation 2 (PS2) platform did when it was launched. Sony is now targetting 6 million PS3 consoles shipped worldwide by the end of the fiscal year (end of March 2007).

While many have doubted the effect the PlayStation 3 would have on the format war between Blu-ray and HD-DVD it's hard to argue with the numbers. Blu-ray sales are up 700 percent since the mid-November launch of the PlayStation 3 and other Blu-ray players from Sony, Panasonic and Philips. According to a recent survey by Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) of over 10,000 PS3 owners, 80 percent indicated they will buy Blu-ray movies and 75 percent said they use the PS3 as a primary device for viewing movies. However, this shouldn't come as such a big surprise as those that have bought the PS3 might as well take advantage of the Blu-ray playback capability, which still is the cheapest Blu-ray player on the market at just $499.

The content advantage that Blu-ray enjoys is another major factor that should become more and more evident now that the Blu-ray exclusive studios (Disney, Fox, Sony, MGM and Lionsgate) are starting to release more titles in the format. When looking at the 20 top selling DVDs of 2006 almost all were released by movie studios supporting Blu-ray, which means that titles such as Pirates of the Carribean and Cars will only be available for Blu-ray. The content advantage should further shift in Blu-ray's favor as the format neutral studios (Warner, Paramount) catch up their Blu-ray release schedules with HD-DVD so that the same movies are available for both formats.

Overall the Blu-ray backers are confident that it's only a matter of time before the Blu-ray format becomes the dominant format in the US market, just as it already accounts for 96% of the market in Japan."

So there was one week in the whole year that BD sales exceeded HD DVD. Also, I'm curious why use the word 'software' instead of movies? Are they counting movies + games? This reminds me of a Sony release where they said BD had shipped 3M disks without bothering to clarify whether it included games as well - apparently it did!

So, we'll need some clarification on that Fox PR statement ;-)

^ you are not supposed to post he whole article. the quote and a link would do. the topic has been discussed to death!! .. and for your information, Blu-ray software can also include PS3 titles. and if the PS3 is such as successful BD player, BDA would have already gloat about the IMPRESSIVE attach rate of the players. But they release absolutely no information on that. All the provided is a research done by BD exclusive studio related, FOX. And on the top DVD sellers .. they are top DVD sellers not hidef sellers. Polls have consistently show that BD movie titles are secondary to HD DVD titles. No amount of BDA or Sony press release is going to change that. Live with it !!

and furthermore, a projected 3.5:1 sales of BD vs HD DVD by 2011 is REDICULOUSLY bad. BD should outpaced HD DVD movie sales 5:1 NOW. BD has 1,025,000 players in the market. HD DVD has MERELY 175,000. Yet HD DVD is the one that is confident enough to announce its attach rate.

Can we get this locked for redundancy.

I can not post links otherwise I would. This was posted on Jan. 9th. I have checked the posts through to Jan. 8th and did not see this as a thread. I have read quite a few threads and not seen this discussed.

I do not see why the entire thing should not be posted. People reading it can make what they want out of it. If you do a search on google using the title of the thread it may bring up a hit.

The reason why I find this interesting is that I own a PS3 and purchased 4 titles. This seems to be a driving factor in BD sales and the release I posted. It is clear to me that the numbers coincide with XMAS and initial ownership of a PS3 system.

Yes, this is just a sales blip due to people getting a PS3 over the holidays and wanting to get a few BD's to play on it. It does not mean they are going to continue at that rate of purchase. They are just checking it out. Now I am not saying BD sales will go back into the toilet like they were during the summer; but, I don't think it is wise to extrapolate these holiday sales too far out into the future. As soon as PS3 sales start to slow, these sales numbers will come back down to earth.

This thread is incomplete. You forgot to post the awesome graph with the numbers for 2011!
I'll tell you what is interesting, (to me anyway).

BD sales increased dramatically up until Christmas, and in fact about caught up with HD DVD sales. Yet, since Christmas another 500K PS3's have sold but they haven't sold any more software. In other words, since Christmas, double the number of PS3's have been sold, but they haven't increased their software sales on Amazon at all. Why would that be?

You can definitely see the effect of the PS3 sales prior to Christmas. But software sales plateaued for BD after Christmas, in spite of nearly doubling their base.

How are you judging?

I don't know about you, but just in January this PS3 owner is getting

Enemy of the State
Crank
The Guardian
Flyboys
Young Guns (first week of February)

The release slate in the next few months is going to triple my BD movies, and by Summer I'll probably only be buying BD disks. Too many good movies in the first month alone. Much better than the current crop of titles - not interested in replacing my whole DVD library (that would be stupid)

By looking at that chart, would you know that since December 23, 2006 Blu-ray has doubled their player base?

Without knowing what the numbers actually mean, how could you say?

The blip on Dec. 23 for both formats probably represent the end of DVD gift purchasing. At that point HD DVD was around 500 and BD 1500.

They are now both at around 800-1000. So HD DVD has fallen and BD risen.

Since around the same time we are being told 30K A2s sold, and who knows how many of the 30K or so add-ons for Dec. were under the tree.

Do you see evidence that HD DVD increased its user base by 60% in December (mostly post A2 release)?

Are you making your points because you are serious, or are they rhetorical only?

Certainly, you can find a point in time in which HD DVD was higher, and you could find a time when it was lower. But for the time period represented on the graph, one has to admit that HD DVD sales remained relatively constant for the period in question.

Unfortunately, I don't know how many HD DVD players were sold in the last half of December, and the chart doesn't have a "2 month" mode. If you go "all time" sales, they change the unit of measurement so that it is hard to read.

It may just be a function of Amazon's accounting system. But there has been a dramatic increase of BD players since Christmas. Yet, one wouldn't know that by looking at the sales ranking chart. The HD DVD player sales, I believe, haven't been as dramatic. I wouldn't expect as much change in thier sales.

Blu-ray's top title on amazon is ahead of HD DVD. And let's not forget that half of their top ten was out of stock for weeks.

And let's not forget that the excuses have multiplied exponentially over the last week...

No one was buying from amazon when the buy.com google checkout was in effect. That ended last week of xmas.

I don't think that the numbers support that the sales plateaued for BD after Christmas unless you mean a sloping plateau. In that chart BD was at 876 average for the top 10 at the end. On December 23rd they were under 1500. Right now the average for the top 10 on Amazon for BD is 683 (HD DVD is at 753). And that chart doesn't show BD passing 1000 until 1/4/07 (6 days ago). Because these are just ranks the sales could have plateaued, but I just don't think the numbers show that.

Also, where did you get that they've doubled their player base since December 23rd?

Before I try to re find the site with the sales figures, do you disagree that the number of players Sony shipped by Christmas is roughly half the number that they have shipped currently? If you do, I'll go look it up. If not, I won't due to the point I make below.

As to the chart, someone else pointed out that the Amazon sales probably won't track linearly. In other words increases in sales won't be proportional to movement on the sales ranking chart. After considering that, I think they were probably right.

Your term, a "sloping Plateau" would have been more accurate for what I was trying to describe. But as I said, I don't think it is relevant since we shouldn't expect a linear relationship between sales and Amazon ranking at any rate. The only thing the Amazon charts are good for is seeing which is format is selling better, not by what extent they are selling better. (Of course, that is just for Amazon.) So if I could withdraw those comments I would, but editing them out would only add more confusion now. So all I can do is say I was mistaken about how those charts should be interpreted.

I don't think it is unreasonable to think that they could have now doubled the number shipped since then. I doubt they've doubled their sales since then since there are plenty of places with them in stock now though.

That behavior, and any statistically signficant changes based on it, would be consistent for all formats -- BD, HD, and SD.

I wanted to buy a few movies. One of which was "Superman Retuns". It was sold out on Amazon. Amazon merchants wanted over 50 dollars for the item. No thanks. A few other Blu-Ray movies also were sold out. This could account for why the software sales were not there.

Amazon's prices are not always the best. I found movies locally in a store which equalled those of Amazon. The Best Buy had a number of cheaply priced Blu-Ray movies. The cheapest was $17.99. The stickers reflected a lower price than their computers. In fact I was overcharged and returned to correct the error. I went back last week and they had jacked the prices up. I won't be buying there now.

The PS3 has a book of coupons inside which were for Blu-Ray movies. There is a $10 off coupon from each studio. Its highly probable that most sales were in store not on the internet. I still haven't used my coupons but will as time goes on.

SR on Blu-ray is a special case because it is the only one I've seen where it can't even be ordered from Amazon when it goes out of stock. But it is in stock right now if you want it and haven't bought it already.

Thanks Darin. I looked in my saved cart and it says "In Stock" now. I'll pick up a copy. Ampther of the ones I wanted to get, (A Knight's Tale) still says, "ships in 1 to 2 weeks". That's a big turnoff as a consumer and another one that I consider sold out.

edit: This one too :
"Sky Captain & the World of Tomorrow [Blu-ray] - Kerry Conran; Blu-ray" Usually ships in 1 to 3 weeks

The only place that BR titles are ahead is in the BR threads on this forum. And of course any HD DVD thread that a BR supporter post in because they don't have enough to talk about in their own threads..
