7.1 back wall speakers

I am getting the HT-S790 in a few weeks and would like to ask two questions.
I have a 57" HDTV and a five year old Panasonic DVD player which works very well with the new TV and has component video hooked up to the TV.

1. Should I put the dvd video through the receiver or run it directly to the tv like it is now. This player also has three other all in one (three wires fused together) wires with one carrying video and two carrying the sound.

2. Since the sofa is one foot from the back wall (wife won't let me pull it out any farther) should I just mothball the two rear wall speakers for now and go with the system as a 5.1 ?

Thanks

I have the same setup as u (57" Hitachi+S790 which I'll be purchasing today thru CC) and Im planning to do the same thing......leave DVD player connected directly to TV and let the audio be routed thru the AVR. Im also going to be using 5.1 for now due to the 'wife factor' ;-). My wife doesn't like 'things' sticking out of the wall!!

Consider using the two left over speakers for "Zone B". You could put them into a bedroom and have some "mood music", just don't expect much in the way of bass production.

Flags...

Oh.. my.. you should consider mounting the back speakers. I was bummed when I thought I wasn't going to be able to do so but... my wife agreed to move our sofa table so I put them on that behind the couch.. No way would I not use the other speakers.. unless setup prevents from doing so. Try them on the wall and see what happens. Technically, you don't need to buy mounts to do so cause the speakers have a small bracket that you can hang them with (to an anchored screw). Are you able to conceal the speaker wire up the wall?

The problem is not only having the sofa against the back wall (about a foot out actually) but there is a six foot wide window behind the sofa centered on the wall that goes to within one foot of the ceiling.

Most wives just don't understand our audio/video needs. Mine can rearrange all of the furniture in the house without me saying a word but I pull the sofa out three feet from the back wall and you would think I killed someone. Go figure!

Why pull the sofa 3 feet from the back wall? Are you sure you don't have any room on the outer trim of that window? There must be a comprimise here.. hmm.. buy her a Dyson sweeper. You will then be prince charming and be able to put those speakers any where you want. It worked for me!

I pulled the sofa out because I figured you needed some space between your ears and the back two wall speakers. I will put them on each side of the window which puts them 5 feet apart.

Only one problem with the vacuum cleaner idea. I do all the housework since I am retired and the wife works full time.

Flags,

I would think that idea would be just fine. I have my speakers on a sofa table that is directly behind the couch (hence the name eh) and it works out just fine.

Stand mount your 2 rear surround speakers, position the stands beside the couch and aim the speakers at the window behind your sofa, and enjoy sound that will sound like it's coming from 6 feet behind you.

I've done it with 2 systems (one 6.1 and one 7.1) and I can assure you it works.
