any news about new Toshiba 1080p dlp's at CES?

I'm holding off buying the 62MX196 until there is some news about the new models coming out this year, but I cannot find aything on the Internet or in these forums about Toshiba's new dlp models.

If anyone learns about this at CES, I would appreciate any feedback.

Thanks.

The above link doesn't provide much, but I haven't been able to find anything else either. Guess this means I'm going to go ahead and get my 62MX196 in a few days just like shelly will probably do.

My understanding is that Toshiba unveiled the 197 series for 2007. IIRC, they have slimmer profiles and support for 1080p input, but they still use color wheels like the 196 series. Toshiba didn't announce any DLPs with LED backlighting.

The only differences so far is the ability to take 1080p , I think, at 120fps.

But there must be some more upgraded differences coming.

I'm still holding out until there is some more coverage. of the new Toshiba models.
But I have put the $$$ aside for when the time to buy seems right. My current Sony 57" Sony rptv still looks good but a bit small to me. Thankfully, I am fortunate enough to also have a front projector room with hd-dvd.

But let's all keep looking for any news of the new Toshiba models.

Just found this. Scroll down to see the beautiful new 65HM197 dlp. Wonder if the new HM series has the color management?

Shelly

1080p/120fps appears to be related to gaming, and even then it sounds like a very high bandwidth/low implementation capability.

For video, 1080p/120fps is likely not going to happen - it would require huge bandwidth with no perceptible benefit. Sounds more like marketing hype.

I think he meant 1080p60. The 197 models accept 1080p input over HDMI, whereas the 196 models were limited to 1080i input over HDMI.

I have a few pictures of it, but they look like the one on the web page posted earlier. All they ran on it was the virtual aquarium. Looked good, though.

Sounds like u went to CES or know someone who did! If so, any info on the inputs on this new 65HM197? Same as current 62HM196 or 62MX196 or more?

BTW I did call Toshiba today and they did verify that is the correct model # but had no more information than that.

I'm still thinking that the better deal, atleast for me is picking up a current 62MX196. At $2700, including the stand and shipping from Crutchfield is not a bad deal. I'm pushing size with a 62" for where I want to put it. A 65" would be a bit too big and a 72" would be extremely too big for my location. Besides, the new unit would probably come with a premium price and limited availability until the market becomes saturated. I realize thats not a concern for some people on here, but it is for me.

But before I do order the MX, does anyone think I would be better off waiting for any reason? If so, what? I can see prices coming down a little more than this, but not a whole lot. I really don't 'need' it yet, especially since this would be my first piece of furniture in the living room. I'll probably sit on the floor to watch it until I get it paid off in a couple of months. Then the sofa is next. Sofa was supposed to come first, but I think I'm probably getting a better deal on this now than I would be on a sofa. Besides, I'm a guy and I like my toys!!!

At Costco, they stock the 62HM116 (which is exactly the same set as the 62HM196, packaged with the matching stand). I heard that it will be under $2000 shortly... you should look into that deal, too.

I have the 62" 116/196 myself and it is awesome.

Yep. They're currently $2299.99. They sent out coupons in a coupon book. One of which was for $300 off the 62HM116, making it $1999.99. They're valid Jan. 22 - Jan. 28. Thats a real good price.
I thought about jumping on this, but I really want a MX. Best deal for that currently with the stand seems to be Crutchfield @ $2699.99 delivered.

I have the 62HM196, and it is great. Gaming and HD from DishNetwork look great. My question is, if it is only taking 1080i via the HDMI, then how are they advertising it as a 1080p?!

The Toshiba deinterlaces 1080i content into 1080p for display.

For a short video tutorial on how this works, see "Film Cadence & Detection" and "Deinterlacing" on the HQV site. Some displays do this better than others.

UGH, great. Now Crutchfield is out of the stand for the MX. Just spoke to then and they said they don't know when they'll become available. They would ship the tv when its ordered and ship the stand when it come back in stock. Guess I'll wait a couple of days and see if it comes in.

I put a picture of it here.

The 2006 DLP 1080p Toshiba does an excellent job deinterlacing 1080i > 1080p ...

The following is from "The Perfect Vision" Winter 2007 Magazine - Review Toshiba 72HM196 1080p DLP HDTV by Scott Wilkinson (some notable quotes) ...

Quote:

page 84
Looking at a pixel-phase test pattern (which indicates the relationship between the imager's actual pixel structure and the pixels in the processed image), Dave and I determined that the NATURAL aspect-ratio setting looks like a 1:1 mode -- that is, we were able to easily discern each pixel in the imager.

Conclusion
The importance of a 1:1 mode cannot be overstated when it comes to 1920x1080 content -- without it, whatever scaling the processor does definitely degrades the image. This is one reason the 72HM196 looked so good displaying HD DVDs (as long as its NATURAL aspect ratio was selected). Another factor is its apparent use of inverse telecine to deinterlace 1080i content, resulting in smooth, artifact-free motion.

page 83
The Last Word
- 1:1 mode makes 1920x1080 content look exceptionally detailed and sharp
- Excellent deinterlacing
- 12-bit processing results in smooth brightness gradients

Definitely love my Digital Video Essentials video calibrated 62HM196 1080p DLP!!!

About the 62HM196, ... adding to the above "The Perfect Vision" Mag. quote ...

Sound & Vision Magazine Subjective Review & Test Bench: Toshiba 62HM196 62-inch 1080p DLP HDTV by David Katzmaier November 2006 ...

Quote:

Test patterns confirmed that the 62HM196 could resolve every detail of a 1080i signal, a feat few other 1080p DLP HDTVs can match.

Test Bench:
The Toshiba resolved every line of a 1080i test pattern, one of the few DLP TVs I've seen that can do so.

It's easy to check if your 1080p HDTV resolves every 1080 lines if you have Digital Video Essentials DVD. Run the SMPTE 133 pattern (like Geoff Morrison - Home Theater Magazine) from my SD DVD Digital Video Essentials (480 upconverted to 1080i by my Toshiba HD-A1 > deinterlaced = 1080p) and my 62HM196 showed all lines of resolution. Impressive as that was, it should really look even more impressive after I get my HD DVD version of DVE!!!

That Video Essentials pattern is 480 lines. It doesn't tell you anything about the displays ability to resolve 1080 lines, nor does it tell you whether the Toshiba can correctly detect the cadence of 24p content in a 1080i signal.

The HQV test disk and Video Essentials should be out in HD-DVD and Blu-ray versions soon -- then we'll have true 1080p patterns to perform these tests.

Would you mind telling me where you got the coupons? I am a Costco super-duper executive member (or whatever the best one is) and I saw that particular TV today and I want to buy it. Can the coupon be downloaded/printed?

I want to buy it Jan 21, the 22nd I'll be too busy to buy it, do you think Costco will let me use the coupon right after I buy it? If nothing else I could return I guess.

Edit: I answered my own question. At my local costco I called and they said simply ask for it at the membership services counter.
