can someone help me out? I'm a newbie to this stuff!

Hello all, great site! I have just made the decision to purchase a Sony KDS50A2000. This will be a big step up for us because we've been watching a 32" Hitachi for 10 years. After all the research it just seems this TV is the one everyone promotes.
My question though is with a DVD player to go with it! I'm still learning about this stuff so bear with me, but I'm under the assumption that the TV I'm getting has an HDMI Input and I thought I heard somewhere along the line that I can upgrade to a DVD player that "upconverts" the signal via 1080i with HDMI cable??

Can someone shed some light on this noob? And if so can anyone reccomend a good cost effective player?

Thanks.

I have the same 50" a2000 and yes it does have HDMI (2 inputs) and can use an upconverting DVD player. Here's the debatable part...the scaler in the TV does a good job upscaling 480p DVDs on its own, so it may not be worth the upgrade.. I did end up buying a new upconverting DVD player and personally I can notice a difference with the DVDs upconverted. How much of this is because of the upconverting I'm not sure...it could also be because my 480p DVD player was a piece of junk.

btw...the player I picked up was the Sony DVPNS75H. There is a big thread on that specific player already, check it out...

Yes, HDMI is recommended. There is nothing technically wrong with component or DVI for video signals, but the industry wants you to use HDMI and that's the way the world is going. It carries audio as well as video, which can be convenient.

In the $149 to $229 range, the Oppo players have many fans. I've been happy with mine: http://www.oppodigital.com/.

The new HD-DVD and Blu-Ray players will also play SD-DVD.
