Pearl+DVDO50 or RS1

Thread Starter
OK: first off I am building a dedicated theater with 123" diagonal 16:9 screen.

Are we getting closer to getting a true read on RS1 versus Pearl (threads seem a little conflicting from real world experience)? Does the amazing contrast ratio of the RS1 make it that much better?

Do most people still believe that 123" screen is too big for the Pearl, even in a dedicated completely light controlled room? Is the RS1 sufficiently "better" in this regard for this size screen.

Given my 11' ceilings I really like the Optoma HD81, but I can't get past the fan noise and the feeling that it is kludgy and buggy. Besides, the flexible vertical offset of the RS1 negates that advantage of the HD81.

I want to spend in the 6K to 8K range and never be concerned with a lack of brightness after reasonable lamp life and I don't want excessive fan noise.

Will buy in about 2 months. Did CES shed any new light on such a choice?

There are plenty of threads on this up near the top of the forum.
I believe the general consensus is:
The Pearl is awesome - some quality control issues, but an overall great value - the JVC will probably be a little better across the board. It hasn't reared its head with many of the issues you've cited (fan noise, brightness...these all appear to be more than adequate). I know that the threads are getting a bit long but the information is there. Look at Tryg's most recent post from CES - it has some really nice, concise information as well as some pictures. Additionally there are some "Impressions of the RS1" threads that have gotten quite long - but the first page has tight information.

The one thing we must all remember is that all of these reports are from pre-production models - the projector in its final form hasn't actually shipped yet. JVC is known in this forum for being honest and dependable (like not showing a super tweaked model at the show - but in the end there are essentially no end user reports on this unit - and there won't be until it actually starts shipping (I'm praying in the next 8 weeks ). The closest professional takes you'll fine are on the cine4home site - and these are pre-production assessments. Granted - they're awesome - but still - these aren't on the same units we'll have in our homes.

One thing I'll point out though - the title of your thread is Pearl + VP50. Now I'm the first to champion an external scaler - they give a trememdous amount of flexibility and performance - often exceding similar or exactly the same chip used in the displays themselves. That said - the Pearl + VP50 combo will put you WAY above the price for the RS1. The RS1 ships with the new Gennum chip - an equivalent processor/scaler with this chip will run you almost as much as the RS1 itself. Although the pre-order for the RS1 is over, give AVS a call - I think you'll be shocked at the price in comparison to the Pearl - my Pearl pre-order price (which I ended up sending back waiting for the RS1) was ~%10 different from the RS1.

Happy hunting!

I have a CH set up and when I zoom the Pearl out for 2.35 and wider AR content, my screen width is 103". I'm not good at math , but I would guess the 16:9 diagonal at that point would be very close to 123".

Brightness, at 150 hrs, is just fine for me on my blackout cloth screen which I'm sure has minimal gain if any.

For the cost differential, which should be under $1K street, the RS1 is probably worth it for most people, save for the most budget minded.

My Pearl is on a 133" diagonal draper in a light controlled theater. Picture is beautiful. On low lamp, 80 contrast, 56 brightness-no issue w/brightness or color at all-I love it. Ron

Go with the RS1.

It's the latest and greatest right now, just like the Pearl was 6-9 months ago.

From the reviews, it has more "punch", better black level, and is sharper than the Pearl too.

I have 134" Carada 1.3 Gain Screen, looking for a BRIGHT full 1080p projector. My Sanyo Z4 is look so dim on it.
I also have a 70" Sony 1080p SXRD rear projectin TV in my living room, to compare both is like comparing morming sun light to evening sun down.

Can you share your opinion with me about this issue?

Will RS1 give more brighter picture than Pearl?

Or is there any other BRIGHTER or BRIGHTEST 1080p projector out there, now or next few months?

ThANKS
Iwan

mark34 - the good news is that by the time you are ready to purchase, we should already have at least one professional review of the RS1, several RS1 owner reviews, and likely several shootouts with the RS1 pitted against the Pearl. Heck, next week that very thing is being done in a controlled environment in the UK with both calibrated to D65 so look for that too.

Also I think the screen size and gain requirements will be the same no matter which of these two you choose. They have similar brightness characteristics except the RS1 will be punchier in dark sense because it does not use a dynamic iris like the Pearl.
