So, I'm tossing around ideas on how to finish around the fireplace, and I've come up with a unique idea, and I like the way it looks, but want second opinions.
I would tile the bottom part between the columns and mantle shelf, and leave the top unfinished.
1. Does it look dumb? If you answer yes to this please skip all the questions to the last one.
2. What color shoud I paint the columns and shelf? It's hard to see from the picture but the front of the columns are fluted. They measure about 4" wide by 2.5" deep. Should I go the same as the rest of the trim on the columns (cream color) and paint the shelf to match the dark tile of the fireplace, or should it all be dark?
3. I was thinking of painting the top (not tiled) part a different color, something to give a nice contrast (or blend) with the black TV. Painting this of course would affect the trim selections. I was thinking either a dark grey like the tiles, or maybe something off the wall, like a burgundy or red...a stark contrast, yet something that still "goes" with the greenish walls?
4. If you don't like the idea, what would you suggest? I was originally going to go with the fluted columns under the mantle, something like this...http://www.comfortglow.com/Desa_images/cma204f.jpg
(not exactly, same idea) but thought that the new way looked a bit more interesting, also it keeps the glare of the wall sconces away from the TV, which was something I was worried about.
