Anyone have any issues with the brightness on the XBR970?

Sometimes while watching this set, it seems like the picture is way to dark. I was watching Law and Order and a lot of the scenes were extremely dark, and turning brightness up to the max did not much to help. I have been wathing law and order for awhile now, and I know for a fact that it isn't supposed to be as dark as this set makes it.

Is there any way I can adjust anything to make the picture brighter without washing out all the color? I am extremely happy with this set aside from it being so dark, as well as one other thing, which is the green or red push. Where within thre service menue is the control to turn down some of the red and green, and what are they listed as? Sometimes some of the people have a red tint to them like they are a bit sunburnt, yet other times I swear I notice some of the faces looking a bit green.

Any help at all with either or both problems would be well appreciated. Thank you so much for your time!

The User Menu provides quite a lot of adjustment.

The brightness control should be used to set the black level. Set it so that black and dark grey are distinguishable from one another.

The picture (contrast) control should be used to set the white level. Set it so that white is bright but not blooming or bleeding (overly white?).

You might try the color and hue adjustments to resolve your color issues. Maybe that will be enough.

If not, service menu information can be found in Kentech's Sony Service Menu thread. Read, understand and heed the warnings about recording values and being careful before making any adjustments. A lot of damage can be done in the service menu. This forum is full of examples.

Good Luck

I have that TV and haven't had any problems...

Have you tried a setup DVD, like Digital Video Essentials, Avia, or the THX Optimizer?

Also, different inputs (DVD on HDMI vs cable box on composite) might like slightly different settings.

I had this same problem with L&O, too, and only L&O. The THX optimizer helps (will let you set black levels at least). But the HD feed for L&O is still kinda dark.

I believe you can adjust SBRT in the SM so that you have more room to work with in the user menu.
