My old Pioneer DVX D409 or New Onkyo S790?

Hi everyone. I have an older Pioneer VSX D409 receiver and some very old AAL speakers that are twenty some years old. Obviously my DVDs sound horrible. I have to turn it up for dialogue and down for big action or music sequences. Is the Pioneer a good receiver to build on or should I just start over with something like the Onkyo S790 which is on sale at CC right now?
