Can you sell a Lifetime Sub to ReplayTV?

I have a ReplayTV 5040 with a Lifetime Sub. It has since stopped working and just sits at the startup screen. I have redone the hard drive twice and no luck. I was wondering if it is legal to jsut sell the Lifetime Subscription so I can use the $$$ to look at other options.

Thanks

I'm sure you could get a decent amount for a broken Replay with lifetime. You just need to find the right buyer. There's nothing illegal about selling a broken unit with lifetime.

But I'd try troubleshooting the problem you're having first. It sounds like a software problem, so it would be worth it to see if you could get it working.

There's plenty of support here if you want it.

I have replaced the software, I also replaced the hard drive. I had redone the hard drive about 2 years ago, so was familiar with the process. It just won't seem to come off that start up screen! So, I guess I will start looking for buyers!

Thanks so much!

There were some grounding issues with some of the 5040s. Before you give up, try unplugging and re-plugging all the connections between the power supply board and the main board. Also, tighten all screws that hold these two boards to the case. It might fix your problems.

In addition to bpratt's suggestion:

Make sure you also try to power up the unit with no cables plugged in at all (except the power plug, of course).

I tried the above, and still no luck. Still sits on the Please Wait screen.

The most likely problem is a bad drive, incompatible drive, or improperly imaged drive. You could always just purchase a ready to go drive. Doubtful the mb is ng.

Mikeyboy sells preformatted drives and I believe has a good return policy.

For a nominal shipping expense you could send it to Mikeyboy for diagnosis and installation of your new hard drive. He charges a fair price and gives prompt service. His website is www.replaytvparts.com

Yep, Mikeyboy's the man. Ship it to him and he'll fix it fair and square. Or just sell it as is on ebay. If you send to Mikey you'll receive back a solid fixed unit with no stress on your part for a fair price. If you sell it "as is" you'll probably get a descent dollar amount.

I think a fair price for a broken lifetime 5000 series (that everyone here thinks they could fix) would be $225 (guess and opinion).

Anyone else want to venture a guess as to price?

if it's the motherboard like he thinks, then the repair involves buying a good unit and performing a hardware swap that may involve desoldering and eeprom programming, things not many here can do.

If it's just the hard drive, he should definitely do it himself!

I would say a non working lifetime unit is only worth about $125- $150

I would guess that it's worth about $100. You can get working ones for under $300.

In looking at completed auctions on eBay 5040 lifetimes, they run around $350 with small drives to over $400 with bigger drives.

im astonded by the prices people talk about paying for replays mind you i love my three and dont want to live without them but i only paid 39.99 for my last one 5504 two years agoand i still think those prices are alot.judging by the email i got offering the pc edition at 20% off i guess its not going over as well as expected.maybe the stand alones will make a comeback.pat

A 55xx is not a 50XX. They only go for a fraction of the 50XX prices. TThere is still nothing comparable to a Replay network, so prices will remain high.

It's pretty remarkable that all these years later the Replay is still unmatched when it comes to recording and playing back SD content. It just goes to show how advanced the thing was when it first came out. If only Replay had continued their pioneering philosophy and led the charge into the HD era.

Yep, they had a 2nd chance to be the #1 standalone HD DVR, but they blew it.

SD via component out still looks pretty damn good on an HDTV.

They blew nothing. The charge to HD is fully blocked by the content providers. The only thing they could hope to accomplish is a piece of crap like the S3 whose only claim to fame is "it does HD". Anything we value as a Replay would never be allowed. DNNA saw the handwriting on the wall and Tivo goes down the death spiral, losing money all the way. At least DNNA is making bucks off Replay.
