HD-A1 not "auto-detecting 480p" via component

Hello,

I've only had the HD-A1 a few weeks, but I swear that every time I played a standard DVD, it would switch over to my mits 65-815 480p input by default.

Now, it remains at 1080i.

If I'm not mistaken, these players don't up-res via component, so why are standard definition disks still being played through the 1080i input on my TV?

I assume I'm seeing some sort of down-res'd version, but what I want to know is:

Was I imagining things before? Do I really have to manually change this with the resolution setting every time I change between HD DVD's and standard DVD's?

thanks

That's strange. Like yours used to, mine switches automatically. And I get a message on screen that says something like "high resolution not allowed with this content."

That isn't what the manual says!

They players upconvert just fine via component, what they won't do, or supposed to not do is upconvert copy protected material beyond 480p on the component video outputs.

Of course the work around is to use your perfectly legal backup copies and not your original discs. Since dual layer recordable DVD media has gotten so prevelent, backup copies should be able to be identical quality wise to the original.

Interesting. I've used three different DVD's, all original, store- bought copies, and they all play via component at 1080i.

Very Strange...

They may not be copy protected, I have quite a few that aren't. I mean you really don't until you try to play it.

I am having the exact same experience with copy protected SD DVDs. I get a warning saying it is converting to 480p, there is a short video glitch, then the image comes back at 1080i. The HD-A1 display says 480p, but it is actually 1080i. I know since my TV does not automatically switch (Loewe Aconda 38" -- pre-Graphite) I'm on firmware version 2.

Does your TV (miata or crtreaprojectn) display the incoming signal type? e.g. 480i/p, 1080i, etc.

I can only tell the input mode -- 480i, 480p and 1080i -- by going into the menu. I know that the component input is in 1080i mode. The only way to change it is through the menu. So, I am absolutely certain that the HD-A1 is sending a 1080i signal out to my TV.

Could the HD-A1 have a way of sensing that the TV is not syncing at 480p? The HD-A1 is definitely changing modes for a split second before reverting back to 1080i.

My HD-A1 reads 1080i output and my tv reads 1080i, so it's definitely displaying at 1080i.

And thanks for the help,

MY HD-A1 front panel and screen display both say 480p. My TV is set to 1080i. This has got to be some kind of weird bug. The HD-A1 DVD upscaling is awfully impressive, but on the paper the HD-XA2 should be quite a bit better with the Reon. I doubt that the XA2 has this same upscaling defect defect though I don;t even know how to find out considering that only one other person has been able to duplicate the behavoir with an HD-A1.
