Hey all,

I own both Denon 2910 ( I think that is the moel#) and A A2 HD player.. WIll the denon play SD dvd better than the A2? Only reason I ask Is now I can still get ok $$ for the denon if I sell it used.. Kep in mind I own over 1300 SD DVD's and maybee 10 HD-DVD's I do not plain on replacing my DVD's with HD aside from some fav's....

I sold my Denon 3910 (for a great loss) when I picked up the HD A1, as, IMO, the HD A1 has a nicer picture via 1080i upconversion. I also have a couple thousand SD DVDs, and purchased a second HD A1 for backup.

I also had a HD A2 for a brief while, but returned it after discovering a few problems, such as not being able to upconvert past 480p via HDMI>DVI. So I wasn't able to get much viewing time in, but if the A2 plays SD DVDs as good as the A1, then I would sell the Denon if you still have a chance to get a fair price. In the end, your eyes should be the judge

If you currently own both of them, why not spend some time comparing for yourself so you can come to your own conclusion?

Good idea. I have the 3910 and the A2, and the 3910 does do a better job
upconverting. I got some bad combing with the A2 on one particular disc. The 3910 had no problems. But the 3910 does exhibit a bit of macroblocking at times, which the A2 does not.

The 3910 is a much better built player and is much faster than the A2,. and has way more features and better audio.

So its a mixed bag

I have a 3910 and an A1 and i ALMOST sold my 3910 until I noiced that some SD DVDs looked way better on the Denon than the A1. Most feature films and well mastered discs look amazing on the A1 but discs that aren't mastered as well like Buffy The Vampire Slayer series looked much better on the Denon. If I would try several different DVDs before making my final decision. And don't just test the DVDs you know look amazing. Test the ones that look kinda dodgy. Gives you a better idea what I'm talking about.

ruk1234,
Did you ever do a comparison? If so, can you share your experience?

The layer change is also much worse on the A2 than the Denons.

I compared the A1 and 2910 an thought they were close to equal in the upconverting department so I put the 2910 in my son's bedroom. I replaced the A1 with an A2. I did not do a direct comparison between the A2 and 2910 but I thought the A1 and A2 were equal. I agree with the layer change comment but this only applies to SD and not HD discs.

The 2910 has smoother layer change, can play multi region PAL/NTSC discs, and boots up much faster. The picture on it is great too. This is why mine is still in service.

i own the 2910 and it still gets used for SD DVD's...i never ever sell a well built piece of hardware and the 2910 definately is in that category as is the A1...bottom line is their both great as upconverting players plus the 2910 loads faster and is easier to use IMO

I have a 1.5 year old Denon 2910 that is for sale if anyone is interested. I am going to e-bay it and test the waters in a few weeks. PM me if you are interested. I am looking at getting the XA2.

I have the 2910 and the XA2 and I think the XA2 is much better at upscaling SD DVD. I use my Denon for DVD Audio and SACD only.
