Let me know if you have any leftovers to sell. I'm still in the framing/wiring stage of the build.

Once again back from the dead. This build has not died nor have I, but it feels like it when I look at the start date of this project. The reality is the we had another baby July 2nd and from April through now have had our hands full with a 2.5 year old and a newborn. Couple that with self employment and a wife in project management and that leaves less than 0 time to work. Additionally during the nicer months I try and get to the race track with my car during any free time and as such the unfinished theater room sits in that exact state.

The good news is the fall puts the car away, outside activities die down, and my itch to work on the theater resumes. As such I have began making progress once again.

Last I left off I had built my frames for the screen wall and had cut the pieces for the screen frame. One of the things I have used in my build that I have not seen people make use of are speaker grill clips. I ordered up a bunch of them in different sizes from parts express. I used them for my screen wall frames over velcro or permanent installation and they worked perfectly. I also decided to use them for my screen frame. As a result I can remove the screen frame, fabric frames, and screen in about 10 minutes. I also plan to make different side frames for masking options as well as a screen cover/acoustic treatment that will simply snap in place to cover the screen for stereo listening.

I have all of the screen frame pieces done with grill clips installed, one of them is upholstered now I just need to do the other 3.

Pics. will follow within the next few days as I get them done...

I finished the screen frame. All the pieces are wrapped and screwed together. The grill clips worked perfect the the entire frame snaps in place on the screen making it removable in a matter of seconds if necessary. I am pleased that it turned out nice.

Here is a closeup of how the corners look.

I also got one of the screen wall frames wrapped and installed. I used the same grill clip technique to hold the fabric frames in place. This makes the entire front wall removable in the event I change or upgrade something. You can see it below the screen.

I hope to get the rest of the frames for the screen wall upholstered within the next week. Then it will be on to the absorber construction for the first reflection points...

Actually we are staying for a few years! We realized what we have can work and honestly we love our location. I am glad as we will definitely enjoy the theater!

I will host a meet early next year, an maybe in the spirit of not being so analytical will just have a bring your gear format!

Screen wall is 95% done. I finished wrapping the front wall frames in grill cloth and I am very pleased with how they came out. The seams are perfect even up close and the grill clips worked great for holding them in place! I do want to put another layer of grill cloth on the back side of the frame to keep the yellow of the OC 703 from flashing through in full light and when the camera flashes. I also need to install the plate covers for the speaker wire. Because I incorporated low voltage boxes in to the frames I can use any outlet cover I want to cover or terminate the speaker and sub interconnects. Here's a pic. of the completed screen wall.

Next I will work on the absorption panels for the side walls and then the diffusors for the back half of the room.

So I made a big mistake..... The same one many people make... I installed the projector and gear before I was DONE! It is NICE to have the room functioning, got it up and running over Thanksgiving and had a chance to enjoy a few movies with the family. I have been tweaking here and there and so far I am pleased with the outcome. Thankfully it has not halted my progress as I find it easier to get little bits of work done here and there than watching movies.....

Here are some current pics.

Tidied up the amp wiring today...

With flash...

No flash...

I still need to hook up my gaming systems hence the extra shelf space, I also plan to install a pullout shelf for my laptop that will have digital audio and dvi connections. I also plan on giving the scaler and cable box their own shelves, I juse need to cut a few more...

I need to order a bunch of wiring to replace some of the hodgepodge pieces I have in certain places and then I will finish the wire routing. I plan on building a solid panel that covers the center of the back of the rack and will route out holes for wire to pass through, then I will be able to secure it to the back of the board. But for now it is acceptable...

The last thing that I will be changing is the name of the space. We are tossing around a few ideas but I will reveal it once it is finalized and the sign hangs over the door....

HAHA yeah. The update is that the room is getting a lot of use in it's less than finished state. Once nice weather hits I usually shift my focus to outdoor projects and that is what has happened. I have no doubt as the blazing heat of summer hits I will be back at it.

I have designed the riser and will build that next. I also have done some wire hiding and termination on the screen wall.

Very nice build. Understand the slow down w/ kids, have a 11yr old son and 11 month old daughter who makes it almost impossible. I am inspired by reading threads w/ everyone's projects and it helps me work out what I'd like to do in the future. Your screen wall is awesome! Nice work and attention to detail.

Thanks for the kind words. We have enjoyed and hosted many movie nights even in the unfinished space! Over the summer I finally worked through the required and earned my time trial racing license so that left little time and money for the theater. But now that cold weather and winter are looming I will be working on it again soon.

First step is to build the riser!

Can't wait for you to finish up and have a little get together.

Riser is 95% complete. My father in law and I framed it out last weekend and today just about got it finished. For reference the front row is the sweet spot as the second row has some compromises. First and foremost because of the shape of the room one wall is closer to the rear seat listeners than the other, that also made the second row of seating a straight row of three berkline's and no room for arms on the center chair. It is basically like a couch but each individual seat will recline...

That said the riser came out pretty nice. We used 2 x 12's to get the proper height and built a stair off either side. We used low voltage lighting one the stairs to keep people from crashing off the side in the dark.... R19 insulation between the joists and 1 layer of plywood followed by 1 layer of OSB over that. Super sturdy and doesn't sound hollow!

Here are some build pictures.

Here you can see the framing. We used sill plate insulation below the treated lumber. This helped toisolate the riser a bit from the concrete and also deal with any issues where the floor is not perfectly flat.

I used my trusty jig saw to cut in the low voltage boxes. I like the lights as they were inexpensive and actually came with two different faceplate options. The one you see in the picture as well as a louvered cover.

We used R19 insulation to deaden the riser a bit. Didn't go too overboard here. Another note is that we used the sill plate insulation between the riser and the wall itself to isolate it.

Here are some pics. of where we called it quits. Riser is completely finished save insulation the stairs and mounting the surface boards. We also installed an outlet on the front of the riser as we often use our laptops etc. in the theater. It was annoying having a cord draping across the aisle...

I love it when the bulb that comes with the light is burnt out...

Also took a pic. of the surrounds. They look great in piano black...

I feel like I just got done watching an all day sitcom marathon with just the last couple of episodes yet to be aired. Nice work! I can't wait to see the final outcome.

Thanks for taking the time to read my thread and respond! Are you saying that Dynaudio's are not your cup of tea or the room? Either way I appreciate the response.

the speakers are not my cup of tea, but the room is cool!

You have done a great job! Your patiences and attention to detail is impressive. I'm especially impressed by the front of the room and the way you built the bass traps, diffusion, absorbors.

I would love to see what the finish product looks like and what the frequency response looks like. I have to think it's impressive. Thanks for documenting you efforts for the rest of us to learn.
