AVN 2007: No Porn on Blu-ray?

Posted on Thu, 11 Jan 2007 03:00:00 CST

Has Sony gone mad? Prominent adult movie producer Digital Playground (site) says it is forced to use HD DVD instead of Blu-ray, because Sony does not allow XXX-rated movies to be released on Blu-ray.

It does not matter how you stand to porn. It is here and it is a massive business. It is also an industry that is an early adopter for new media technology. VHS might not have won with out the adult film industry adopting it.

German Heise has interviewed Joone the founder of Digital Playgrounds at the AVN 2007 show in Las Vegas. Joone says actually said last year he is committed to Blu-ray. Now they announced four HD DVD titles in the United States. In the interview Joone says he was forced to use HD DVD, because no Blu-ray disc manufacturer would make his discs, because Sony was against it and they would loose their license.

If this holds true, Blu-ray is at a major disadvantage and could fail.

Yeah,

It could be a problem but it will not be.

There's far to many real movies that are fun coming to Blu Ray for this to even put a dent in it's acceptance. (James Bond, Spiderman, Cars, Pirates and the list goes on.)

However, If you watch mostly porn then HD DVD may be just the ticket.

I love blu-ray and hope you're right. Just watched Crank and the PQ was amazing. Not an academy award winner but good entertainment nonetheless.

Porn is what the internet is for, not your blu-ray player.

.

The real issue is if you watch "any" porn it will be on HD-DVD. That's a very grey but big business especially when it comes to video. I'd also consider that just like home audio/video, most porn purchases/rentals/expenditures are driven by males.

Then again, I'm not sure I'd want to see porn in HD and who knows how "official" or permanent this is but if true I would not make a stance on differentiating yourself from the competition here.

And in the PS3 gaming section at that. Shouldn't this be over in the Blu-ray software section?

Hey

Actually,.. I think most porn nowdays is online and you can grab the FLV (flash videos) or Divx files and transfer them directly to the ps3 or just use the ps3's internet browser to go and view them directly. So,.. there's plenty of porn availability for PS3. And regular porn DVD's could be viewed on any Blu Ray player too. Not only that but Blu Ray recording drives are not expensive and while the blank media may be pricey it's not expensive compared to the cost of Porn on DVD or HD DVD. So,.. why don't the XXX people just grab the gear and get to it, I can't really see what's stopping them.
