Help getting Dolby Digital with HTPC to receiver

I just setup an Asus P5B-E motherboard (C2D) with a fiber TOSLINK cable going into a Harman/Kardon receiver. I ripped Monsters, Inc. to the hard drive, converted it to MPEG format (using VOB2MPG.exe) and used Windows Media Player to watch it. The sound is not coming out as Dolby Digital (just pro logic or 3 channel stereo).

Any ideas?

When you ripped Monsters Inc, did you make sure that you had the correct audio stream (DD5.1) selected? Also, did you enabe S/PDIF output in WMP? I don't use VOB2MPG, but does it have a selection to select which audio streams you want to use?

Yes, I had the correct audio stream selected. I just saw where to enable the S/PDIF output in WMP, but that's for DVD playback.

I did find that the latest trial version of PowerDVD does give me Dolby Digital output.

Can anyone else give me advice on this?

I am just looking for a free player that will play the VOB files in Dolby Digital.

If I am understanding the OP correctly the process that is being done is converting VOB to avi (mpg). if this is so then if you are not saving the DD audio as AC3 then when your are converting the movie you are downmixing the audio to 2 channel stereo.

But if you are saving the audio as AC3 you will need AC3 filter to pass the audio information to your receiver.

If you are interested in having a direct 1:1 copy of your DVD to your HDD you will need software such as DVDycryptor (sp?) or CloneDVD or any other type of DVD ripping software.

Then for playback you will need either one of those DVD software (cyberdvd, windvd) or use Nvidia Pure DVD and in their options setting select S/Pdif as the audio out this will send the AC3 information untouched.

I am using DVD Fab Decrypter to rip the movie to my HDD. From there, I was looking for free software to play the movie and get ac3 Dolby Digital sound.

Jester: I wonder if you need to install this to get AC3 passthrough to your receiver?

This page also gives an explanation of how SPDIF passthrought works.

what Mpeg decoder are you using? Some times the mpeg decoder will muck up and not set the AC3 passthrough correctly. Also maybe try using a better playback software, if you want free try out Zoom Player or Media Player Classic.
