As far as I know, you are right. I always have believed that DPI is only related to printing an image. The two pictures are different, but were they scaled to exactly the same size?


It is easy to skip the text, and just look at the pictures.

Smaller size of the screenshots gives you the perception of extra detail and sharpness. Especially on screenshots taken from a projector.

Is that what they teach you in class? Wow, I strongly recommend to change schools immediately!

The dpi setting has nothing to do with quality when you look at the screenshots on a computer monitor. It also has nothing to do with file size.
Change the dpi setting of an image from 72 to 500 in Photoshop. It won't look different unless you print it. And of course the file size won't change either.

Also your critisizing the JPEG format is uncalled for. A JPEG at max quality looks practically identical to an uncompressed image.


Ask your teachers to teach you what resampling means. You're not helping anyone with these "tips".

I have to say that some of the pictures posted look like DVD quality, and others look HD. Maybe some of you have the sharpness too low.

The "Ant Bully" HD-DVD finally came in the mail today. I ordered it before Christmas.

Here are some HD-DVD screenshots that I took for my review of the James Taylor tribute concert (another disc that I pre-ordered back in October which finally arrived last night)...

Not a good example. That shot shows the infamous (to me anyway) aliasing/moire on the stairs. My least favourite part of the movie because of that distraction. Great detail otherwise.

Having watched Any Bully more than any other HD-DVD (I have a 2.5 year old), I now realize that I need a bigger TV or wall. My wife is going to hate you!

Its funny that the picture looks more real life than the person beside the projected picture.. lol

while all other HD pictures here look also very nice, they are a joke against this CRT front projection....

But the price for this CRT is also a joke for the normal customer....

Another thread was asking about the comparison of HD-DVD vs HD cable (link), so I took these last night from HD-DVDs that I also have from my DVR. But until I get the same screenshots from the cable box, I figure I'd add these to the HDDVD screenshot thread.

I have several more HDDVD titles that I'm going to try to compare. The hard part will be finding the same frame on the HD cable broadcast.

I get the impression only limited by the LCD monitor I'm viewing the photos on, and it's a nice monitor. What's the rough price of your projection setup, if I can ask, Clarence?

@Clarence... How much do you get paid to be a standin in all of these movies???

G90's are 8-10k

G90's used to go for $20K-$25K new. Mine was much less. They probably decrease 20% each year. 3 years ago they sold for $15K. 2 years ago, $12K. Last year, $10K.

There are a couple of G90s listed in the AVS Marketplace this week... $6K and $8K (with brand new tubes).

My projector has 8500 hours on the original tubes, with plenty more life left in it, as you can tell.

So overall, the cost is comparable to the current 1080P digital projectors. Especially if you include 8000+ hours worth of replacement lamps.

The G90 weighs 242 pounds , but CRT is worth the weight



Yeah... pretty annoying, eh?

It's a silly, old tradition from when I used to have a 12' wide screen (172" diagonal). But it helps depict the scale and emphasizes that this isn't a 42" plasma.
