Blu-ray studios lead 2006 box-office number

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - A swaggering pirate, a hotshot roadster and a sexy new 007 helped bring moviegoers back to theaters last year, as domestic ticket sales recovered from a down year in 2005.

Along the way, Sony Pictures reached new heights, claiming 13 No. 1 releases and a domestic box office record of $1.698 billion.

Second-ranked Disney ($1.5 billion) claimed the top two films of the year with "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" ($423 million) and "Cars" ($244 million).

20th Century Fox held steady at No. 3 ($1.4 billion) thanks to a solid string of films including "X-Men: The Last Stand," "Ice Age: The Meltdown" and "The Devil Wears Prada."

Meanwhile, 2005 market leader Warner Bros. Pictures, which arguably had one of the most anticipated slates of the year, tumbled to fourth ($1.1 billion), because of such misfires as "Poseidon," "Lady in the Water" and a disappointing "Superman Returns," even though the superhero's long-awaited return did climb above the $200 million mark domestically.

Paramount Pictures ($953 million) made some gains thanks to its acquisition of DreamWorks, which provided the studio's top-grossing movie, the animated film "Over the Hedge."

Universal Pictures ($796 million) also struggled -- not only did it lose longtime chief Stacey Snider to DreamWorks, but it propelled only one film, the romantic comedy "The Break-Up," into the $100 million club.

New Line Cinema ($252 million) and MGM ($171 million) brought up the rear, with only one movie between them -- the latter studio's "Rocky Balboa" -- cracking $50 million.

Sony made the most dramatic turnaround. After a dismal 2005 that saw only one $100 million-plus earner with the romantic comedy "Hitch," the studio installed a new marketing head in Valerie Van Galder and pushed its wide releases. The diligence paid off and the studio can now boast five $100 million-plus films, including the year-ender "The Pursuit of Happyness," which crossed the $100 million mark over New Year's weekend.

"We really had a great mix of pictures," said Jeff Blake, the studio's chairman of marketing and distribution. "We had the rare adult blockbuster with 'The Da Vinci Code,' the biggest Bond ever with 'Casino Royale,' two fantastic summer comedies in 'Click' and 'Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby,' two successful animated films, 'Open Season' and 'Monster House' and we're topping off the year with 'Pursuit of Happyness.' Between Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell, Will Smith, Tom Hanks and the exciting new Bond in Daniel Craig, we had a great mix of talent."

Good stuff. I notice that Universal is near the bottom of the pile while the top 3 are exclusive to BD.

It is happenstance that 2006 was such but it is still great news for BD in 2007 wrt releases and movie marketing for the format vis-a-vis HD-dvd.
The most surprising thing is that the BD exclusive studios have really pulled one out of the bag, whether or not these titles are released day and date is not that big of a deal, it is just the fact that they will eventually be released.

I think Universal are in real dire straits at the moment, not because they are HD DVD exclusive, I don't think that really matters, mostly because they only had one hit movie for the whole of 2006, and they only have one really successful mainstream television program in House, and one successful Sci-Fi program in Battlestar Galactica. Diffucult times at the moment, I hope that they can do better this year, but by the looks of it Sony, Disney and Warner are going to be the studios to beat again with Spiderman 3/PotC 3/HP5.

PotC 3.. awesome

I havent looked forward to a movie as much since Armageddon.. yes, I am a geek.

cant wait to see how Sony will enevitably screw atleast few of the 13 No. 1 theaterical releases in BD oppps
post #6 of 34
That's great news. However, what about the older movies that most of us can't remember or have never seen on a big screen? POTC2 is still fresh in my head so I really don't mind waiting (and I do own both formats).

Sweet Jesus, people have no taste. That's a LOT of crap. The movie industry's LCD direction is just depressing. The only movie in that whole release that was any good is Casino Royale.

Yeah, I have to agree. My wife made me get PotC2, and frankly, I've seen Three Stooges movies that were more intellectually stimulating. This is one reason why I don't go to the theaters any more.

I wish I could forget seeing PoTC 2.

I want the brain cells that steaming pile is occupying back

Although I liked the first one.

LOL tyhe POTC-DMC looks excellent upscaled on my A2....but as far as a movie it blows...who wants to sit in a theater for over 2 hrs on DNA encrusted seats spending all your money at the snackbar.

I have looked at all the BD releases and i dont see any films on thier that i will buy.....except for Casino Royale...and cars and nemo and monsters inc please...animation is not what attracts me to hi def it is still a kids movie.....i want kill bill and pulp fiction and jaws and 300......jurassic park.

I'm glad its not just me. I thought POTC2 was crap, and X3 stunk as well.

Casino Royale was definitely amazing!

I'll be sorely disappointed if the Casino Royale (50GB, AVC) BD release in March isn't a reference disk. But I am hoping for the best.

Exactly...

People can see a pretty good list of rankings for the individual movies here:

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/yearly/...yr=2006&p=.htm

It looks like that has continued into 2007 and so the numbers are up until now.

Universal has released 4 of their top 5 from that list, with "Inside Man" still left out of those.

Congratulations to them for 2006 but as anyone in the know will tell you these things fluctuate widely from year to year...

Check out the different years:

Since 2000 it has really not fluctuated all that wildly.

Why wouldn't it be, all of Sony's latest have been very good 4/5 and above on HDD, and I would imagine that they would put everything they have into this one.

And Casino Royale is over $533,000,000 world wide. Looks like Bond is alive and well. The Craig naysayers have been quiet.

Well, I think after his performance, there's not much to complain about. Craig is easily the most believable Bond and the movie was deviod of all the lameness that's typical Bond. All in all, a stunning turnaround for a franchise that has never lived up to the hype. It's the first Bond movie I'd like a second viewing of.

Thank goodness, judging by those charts.

Impressive! Good news for Blu-ray.

Very interesting.

I am very much looking forward to the Casino Royale BD.

I think me missing CR in the theaters worked out rather well for me.

Now I get to see it in 1080p at home instead of begin surrounded by handphone-toting strangers at a cinema.

Maybe they chose to be subsidized by becoming the sole supporter of HD DVD because of their underperforming movie business.

I'm pretty sure Monk is more successful than both of those shows. And I'm not saying that like Monk could save HD DVD, but they do have more than two successful shows. Psych is another one that looks to be a fairly decent success.

I was looking at it internationally, but I am sure you are right when looking at the USA only.

It is just that over here House and BSG are popular and they are popular on the continent as well.

I would hope not, the money involved in any HD/BD disc sales pales in comparison to making good films, just ask Sony .

Ah, I see. It's good to have an international perspective on things.

Now, as far as I'm concerned, whichever format brings out Black Books, Spaced, Green Wing, etc. in HD, will be the one I consider the winner
