just wondering what the difference was between the 2 followin optical cables from monoprice...

1) PREMIUM 6FT Optical Toslink 5.0mm Cable w/Fancy connector

http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...ormat=2&style=

2) 6FT Optical Toslink 5.0mm Cable

http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...ormat=2&style=

does the "fancy connector" on the first one serve any real purpose? thx

No, the fancy connector does not make a difference. Either of these cable will serve you purpose.

Is it just me, or is the only difference the gold ring? I guess if you want to dress up the mass of cables on the BACK of your component rack...

the major diff is that the 1st one is out of stock right now and the 2nd one is still about 1/2 the price or better then what you will buy in a B&M

They will both do the job in an identical manner, IMHO.

I switched from coax to Toslink b/c of the possibility of electrolytically induced corrosion with the coax's RCA type plug. So far the sound is just as good and the cable is a bit easier to hide. Not as easy to connect and disconnect, though.

optical cable is just that, light. Any optical cable you buy, be it $1 or $100, will offer the same performance.
