Will this work for a home theater ? laser star
post #2 of 77
Looks interesting! Fairly inexpensive compared to fiberoptic ceilings and much simpler installation. I know the results would be very different, but I would like to hear responses from anyone willing to try it.

That looks really neat.

i have a low ceiling, but could cut a hole in the floor to mount it flush with the carpet... might be cool

Cool idea - wonder what that would look like on my flat black ceilings? Someone with more money than me should give it a try and let us know what they think!

The stars didn't look random enough to be realistic to me. Check out the video and you'll see what I mean. Notice the center star and the evenly spaced stars circling it. Otherwise with creative placement of a mirror or two, I imagine you could fill the entire ceiling.

Has anyone tried it yet? They did mentioned about using it in home theather fro the drive in movie experience.

Its made by Can You Imagine (http://www.cyi.net) so you may be able to find it cheaper. I know Spencers carries a lot of their stuff.

I noticed this unit in an email that SmartHome sent to me advertising their products.

I am very interested in hearing about the results when used in a home theater. Mine is not finished yet and won't be finished for a while or I would step up and give it a try.

Someone help us out ...

I noticed that too with the video, but I think that is just due to poor lighting when the video was made. If you look at the high-res picture on the page, much more detail is shown and it does look much more random and realistic.

Ditto.

I'm really interested as well.

I'm interested in some feedback as well.

I just ordered it too. I hope it is nice...

Check out the Homestar Pro on ebay. It features real constellations, the moon etc. The laser stars product seems o.k. but the six identically spaced stars around the central bright star look unrealistic to this astronomy fan.

The problem with the Homestar Pro is that it uses LED which will send unfocused light if not at the exact distance it needs to be at.

This laser projector uses green lasers which will keep the light focused in a lot smaller dots from a variety of distances. The cloud structure is cool but can be turned off at the unit. I hope this one is neat, but I can see this taking off into a more complete system down the road. The other cool thing about this is that the stars move as well as the cloud. The homestar pro will only slowly revolve.

Also the video shows 6 identically placed stars, but if you look at the high res picture, that is really not the case. When is the last time you have seen a consumer grade camera do a good job in low to no light situations?

For those that ordered laser stars, in addition to letting us know how well it works in the HT environment, I would also like to see how and where you placed the unit. I am specifically curious to see if it can be placed in the riser, stage or possibly a column.

Thanks,
T.Wells

Well in my room, it will go in front of the upper right column. No one will see it except for the person in the upper right seat. That is the plan anyways. Has anyone recieved theirs yet? It was out of stock over the weekend and it looks like smarthome restocked on Tuesday.

I may put it up front if the column idea does not work. The other neat thing about this unit is that it has a shooting star function every once in a while. That is one of the things I really wanted to see in a fiber optic installation if I did one.

I should get mine on Friday. (I hope)

I was wodering if this will muddle up the contrast projected by the FP.

zxlr8, in the high res photo there are certainly many more stars visable, but the six uniformly spaced stars still stand out to me. Nebulas usually have a greenish hue to them as well, never solid blue. I still prefer the stars in their authentic location. To each his own my friend.

Wonder if they'll release a blue laser version? Blue laser technology is still expensive.

how long and what kind of light bulb does it use?

Never mind authenticity if you can't see it due to lack of brightness. Do you have personal experience with home star pro?

I got mine today. My wife opened it up and she said it works great. She also said it seems smaller than what she thought it would be. That is good news. Maybe I can set it somewhere more discrete.

From Light Energy:

In case you are wondering, the stars are green. Once you see this light show you will be happy they are not white. Just imagine living on a planet where the stars appear green and you will be fine.

I love that quote!

Anyway, it looks great and the WAF factor has been considered here (small, cheap and no fiber optic covering the ceiling to deal with!)

I had always considered going with a "night sky" ceiling and this appears to be the ticket. I bet my 3 yr old would LOVE to have this in his room!

Anyone who is thinking of a theme theatre (I thinking the active Signus X-1 and the POTC themed rooms) should get this...or how about the one where his HT is the bridge of the Enterprise (TNG). Man, how cool would it be to have "on Screen" and see that from the "Captain's chair" prior to a movie!
