Oops, reversed this in my post. You are correct - I get 48khz with Bitstream and 96khz with PCM. I updated my post accordingly. And yes I have an HDMI cable connected (and only an HDMI, no Toslink).

Guess no harm if I will just leave the SPDIF setting to PCM and HDMI to Auto in order for the receiver to read 96 kHz sampling rate for TrueHD playback .

That's how I'm leaving mine for now. When you have a chance try to play some good TrueHD scenes back with it on PCM and then again with it on Bitstream. I'm curious to know if you hear any difference. I didn't have a chance to do an A/B just yet, but I did listen to it on PCM and it sounded great. However if memory serves me correctly the overall volume level may have been a bit lower with PCM playback vs. Bitstream. Let me know if you notice this too.

Geez...it's indeed very confusing & frustrating

This is nothing new. This was the first thing I noticed when I got my A2 in early December. The A1 didn't behave this way and ouput everything at 96Khz. The A2 when setting the SPDIF ouput so you get 96Khz didn't sound as good as the 48Khz settings. But I haven't tried this again since the original firmware. Either way the SPDIF setting should NOT affect the audio on the HDMI output. I figured they would have corrected this since there have been two firmware upgrades but apparently not. I've just left mine in the setting that has produces the 48khz ouput. Maybe I should try it again to see how it sounds? AFAIK though the TrueHD tracks are only at 48Khz so far. Any 96Khz output is from the player upsampling.

I just received my A2 last Friday
I ran 1 movie just to test it, then loaded 1.2 via an ISO burned CD
No problems at all

Watched a couple of movies (WOW!) then connected it to my router
Ran the 1.3 update - no issues at all

I will initialize it tonight, as I didn't realize that was necessary
I was confused on the settings for HDMI, but will set that to Auto tonight

I have watched 3 movies in total - 2 HD DVD and 1 SD DVD
However, my SD Gladiator won't play - it recognizes it as a dvd, but nothing on screen
The bonus DVD plays though...

My A2 that is shipped from Amazon arriving in a couple of days, it should have version 1.2, yes?
Regarding Initialization after downloading the firmware update - I did NOT do this and all seems to be fine, and the player saws it is running 1.3. If someone knows for certain that Initialization is needed and not just a rumored thing to do please let us know and why. Thanks.

Hi,

You're welcome.

As you can see some of the more knowledgeable forum members seriously question the value in upsampling content.

It goes without saying that if this is a "feature" Toshiba went about it in a very screwy manner, and neglected to mention it in the manual or any official documentation. It must be one of those "stealth" features.

I just got off the phone with a tech support agent from Toshiba (I was ordering my firmware updates), and he said that you do not have to initialize the player after firmware updates have been installed.

Brad,

I got mine back at the Start of Feb 07 and that had a Jan 07 build and 1.2 firmware, so yes, you should have the 1.2 version when it comes in from Amazon (assuming that its a recent build that is, and not one thats been sitting in the warehouse since last year....!)

After upgrading my XA2 to v1.3, I couldn't go in and change the speaker settings until I initialized again. Not all Tech support reps have their ducks in a row.

I just bought mine last Sunday from the local BB... picked out the newest looking box and when I opened it up at home it was an October '06 build! Funny part is I waited this long just so I would get one with the 1.2 firmware! I'm still happy with it so far, even though I'll have to update with the downloaded ISO.

I don't understand why so many people are reluctant to initialize their units after upgrading the firmware.

Hell, I'll do it. I don't care. I just didn't think is was necessary.

Hey Guys,
Where do I download the 1.2 ISO for the HD-XA2? I need to install this before being able to go to 1.3 online, right?

Why is this necessary?
Nope, you don't need version 1.2 before you update to version 1.3

I went straight from version 1.0 to version 1.3

Yes I think that's the case with the XA2, but for some reason many with firmware 1.0 for the A2 could not update online.
oops, that is exactly right. I should have said I have the XA2 and ......

Thanks for the clarification lovingdvd.

He just said that you didn't HAVE to do it unless you wanted to....it wasn't required for the firmware to work. That's all I'm saying.

What is persistant storage? How is it used and for what reason? I go into the settings and the menu makes no sense.

Bookmark info and other things. Not used a lot yet. If you save some bookmarks and wade into it on the menu you see more stuff/entries. Then if you "Initialize" the extra entries go away.

Having waited for all the bugs in the update process to be worked-out, I find I've got one of the SOFTWARE ALREADY UPDATED units (1000/T17M).

Rather than going the ISO route, have any of your gotten Best Buy to trade for a new unit AFTER the 30-days on the grounds you have have a "defective" unit?

If so, who at the store did you talk to. The CS kids are useless.

Hey Gang,

Where to download ISO for v1.3? I have an A2 that is still on v1.0. Ive tried to update it to 1.2 thru the ethernet port, but Ive gotten the dreaded already up to date message.

So, not wanting to wait for a disc from Toshiba, where may I dowload an ISO of v1.3? also, what steps do I need to take to copy it onto a CD? What are the install steps? Thanks!

There is no ISO for 1.3 (yet). You'll have to download the 1.2 ISO, upgrade that way, and then you should be able to connect to the internet and update to 1.3.

1.2 ISO can be found here:

What exactly does it say if you have the latest firmware when looking in update? What numbers should I be seeing. It told me I was up todate.
...well it says "....already updated...update process will end now..." at the point where i can choose wether to upgrade or not it says 1.2/TMxx(some number, i forgot)...
I used the ISO to update to 1.2 and then was able to update via cable to 1.3/T19M

Has anyone try playing the following Title ? " Discovery Atlas: Italy Revealed". This is the only Title the HD-A2 will not play. When I place the Disc in the player the display says : "loading" - then "HD DVD" - then "Play" - then "chapter & time" but, then it diplays "mesg" and on the TV screen it says " Can not play dics, Check disc". I thought at first it was a bad disc so I bought another one from a different store about a week apart with the same result. I have the latest firmware v1.3 but still will not play. I watch over 50 movies already and this is the only one that will not play. Anyone else with this disc and Problem??

All of these discs are manufactured defective. The Australia is also defective.

They are deciding on fixing it in the next firmware upgrade or replacing all of the discs.
