n view of Toshiba's recent launch of an inexpensive HD DVD player with a retail price of US$599, Taiwan optical disc drive makers think an entry-level HD DVD player priced at up to US$500 may be available in the second half of 2007.

The increasing upgrade in resolution of large-size LCD TVs and PDP (plasma display panel) TVs to full HD (high definition), 1,920x1,080, will boost demand for Blu-ray Disc (BD) and HD DVD players/recorders, the sources indicated. However, the currently available BD and HD DVD drives are very or quite expensive and the critical price level at which demand will begin to take off is estimated to be US$500 based on the development history for DVD drives, the sources pointed out.

Expecting decreased costs for key components such as pick-up heads and chipsets, and a reduction in defect rates during product assembly, there will be room for prices to fall to blow US$500 in the second half of 2007, the sources pointed out

Whew..this is great news. I was getting a little worried there. LOL

Can anyone tell me what I'm missing here. This article is in fact dated January 19th 2007.

I just visited amazon and Toshiba HD-A2 HD-DVD Player is listed $399.

??

Yeah, when I saw that on digitimes it was a genuine WTF moment. I mean, the HD-A1 launched with an MSRP of $499.99. And that was last April.

The Lite-On and similar players must be substantially below $500 or nobody will buy them.

Didn't the freakin' things DEBUT under $500 like a year ago? Sure the article wasn't dated 2006?

Maybe they're talking about the price within Taiwan. It is possible that various taxes and lack of competition of authorized dealers there are currently making the price stay above $500.

In another display of cluelessness, The Inquirer has run with the story:

HD-DVD for $500 this year - Taipei plots price snips

I saw the one from the inquirer and that site is pro HD-DVD and when I read it I was like WTF. I guess it's just a error or something.

HD-DVD has always been half the price of Blu-ray so being $500 is nothing new. MSRP for $400 or lower would be news not this!

Most likely we will see the HD-A2 selling for that rumored price of $299 by the time the HD-A20 is released. By then maybe even a Taiwanese player, hopefully they don't come out at the $500 price mark.

DigiTimes has reported that Taiwan's optical drive manufacturers think that a $500 entry level HD DVD player may be available in the second half of 2007.

Apparently Taiwan's manufacturers haven't checked the price of Toshiba's second generation HD DVD player, the HD-A2, as you can already buy it for less than $400.

Maybe that's $500 Taiwaneese, which is like $5.99 US?

Man it's amazing I'm seeing other sites picking up on this as though it's really news. Makes me wince because if this ambiguous stuff isn't being caught I'm wondering what stuff i'm being fooled on that I'm not so current on.

Becaue it makes no sense. Why is there a press release claiming that $500 HD DVD players are coming when the format launched at $499?
