ColorHCFR setup

I learned about this wonderful free software. I downloaded it and order my Spyder sensor. The manual is not very clear. I'm confused on the setup. They say to plug in the sensor and then install the driver. They say to browse the pilote folder. Does that aply to the Spyder sensor, or just the home-made sensor?

Also under preferences, for a HDTV projector, do I change to HDTV? Do I change any of the gamma settings?

P.S. - I'm sure I'll have more questions once the sensor arrives and I actually try to use it, as I have never calibrated before....

After you install the spyder software you need to copy the spyder.dll to the ColorHCFR folder so that it can find it.

As to what reference to set, you need to choose Rec 601 for DVD material and Rec 709 for HD material.

Thank you for the reply!

The english translation is very confusing.
When you open a new file, it asks for the generator. If I'm using Getgray in my DVD player to calibrate my projector, do I select view images or DVD manual?

I still don't know which gamma setting I should use for my LCD projector on the newest software version. I'll have to try a couple and see....

We recommand to use "Display gamma with black compensation" for video projection in a dark room. For a TV screen used with ambient light, Camera Gamma with standard offset is nice (week contrast but good black details in ambient).

First try gamma with black compensation with a 2.2 gamma value. Then, if you think you miss black details in dark scenes, the "Optimized (regression)" mode would be fine. That's only my opinion, I know people who will advise you to use always the Optimized mode

though I understand the desire to push the gamma this-way-or-that for personal preference, making a "standard" option which strictly adheres to the standards is the only logical approach....

I will be calibrating the new JVC-RS1, with 12,000:1 contrast ratio with no iris. Still think gamma with black compensation is the best choice?

Hi rdalcanto

Well, with a so high native contrast level, you may try Camera Gamma with a very low manual offset value (something like 0.01 or 0.02), or Optimized(regression), which is simpler to use (no need to try many offsets by hand). Both mode avoid being too much dependent of probe sensitivity in blacks.

Again, that's just my opinion, and I'm not an expert... but since experts can't agree each other, I think anybody can feel free to have his/her own opinion
