Are they equivalent to any Polks, Athena, or HTD speakers? I have the Bose 201s and I don't think they sound good. However, I don't think the Polks in that price range sound a whole lot better. What speakers in that price range will sound a lot better than the Bose?
I think 201s are decent speakers for the price if your situation warrants them.
First let me give myself some "street cred" by saying I have set up multiple home theaters, car stereos, etc. and I have a 7.1 Ascend system in my own home and will soon be building a huge Infinite Baffle subwoofer. I like good sound.
My parent needed to fill a large area with diffuse sound. It didni't need to be that loud, and they needed the speakers to mount on the wall up high. The Bose 201s have the diffuse sound, have very good bass for their size, and were availble in white which matched perfectly. They also come with very nice wall mount brackets that hide any wiring.
They were simply the best speakers for the job.
I also had a pair of Bose 301s many years ago and they sounded decent, had good bass, and never blew, unlike many other brands of speakers me and my friends have had. My parents still use them today.
In my experience (notice I said experience, not opinion) Bose makes some decent nitche products. The stand-alone speakers have worked very well for me. That said, for the price of most of their systems, (especially the accoustimass) better speakers can be had. Assume you can put up with the added complexity and room needed over the Bose.
