I am going to sign the one year contract with Comcast in a few days for HD service and I could use some help.

I will be getting the "Digital premier and sports entertainment package" and that includes the "free" DVR.

The fact that the DVR is free makes me think it may not be the best DVR that Comcast offers in the Boston area so I am turning to all of you for advice.

I don't want Comcast to stick me with a DVR that is inferior to what is available.

Can someone tell me if there is a difference in the DVR's that Comcast offers in the Boston area?

Comcast says the DVR I will be getting records 40 hours of HD so does that mean it is the best DVR they offer in Boston?

What about this new 250GB HD DVR? Should I ask Comcast if I can have that DVR?

All of these things are new to me. I will be getting my first HDVT in a few weeks and I have no idea what to look for in services from Comcast. And I do not exactly trust them to give me the best advise.

Can someone tell me what to do before I sign this contract and I am stuck with it for one year.

If it matters I live in South Boston.

Any and all help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jim

You must be getting the new 250gb dvr, my 120 gig dvr only does about 24 hours of HD.

The Norwell office - I stopped in there the other day and they have them in stock.

If you're signed up to get an HD/DVR you'll get one of about 5 different models. Just a complete crapshoot on what the tech was issued & has on his truck. If you get an older model (or one that you just don't like for whatever reason) you can bring it to a payment center & exchange it at any time.

Lowell also has them in stock (picked one up today) and Westford said they've had some and should have more soon.

I've been using a 'One for all' 8910 remote for a few years now with the same code & still using that with the new DCX. If I was using the Comcast issued remote I'd use the old silver one. Or I'd program the code from that one into the new gray remote, code 01376 if I remember correctly. Info on how to do that is in the wiki. If you're using the new gray remote with the default code the 30sec skip button won't work.

See what I mean about Comcast not telling the truth. I just left the payment office about 5pm today. I needed to fill out the form to change the name on the account.

Anyway, I asked if there was more then one type of HD DVR and I explained that I wanted the one with the most storage capacity. I was assured there are only two DVR's.

One is for HD and the other is for non-HD and the two people that work there were sure of that.

I am telling you I do not trust this company. If FIOS was in available were I live I would jump on it ASAP. The terrible thing is I am switching my Verizon phone and DSL service over to Comcast so I can get the sale price for the package I am ordering. It must be the triple plan for this price.

Thanks for the feed back and I will be sure to ask about the 250GB HD DVR.

What makes you think jonwww went to the same office as you did, Jim?

I think you're making some wild accusations there. They're not lying just because they aren't telling you what you want to hear.

Bicker1, no where did I imply that I was at the same payment office jonwww went to. My post said I had just left "the" payment office not "that" payment office.

I also don't feel I made any "wild accusations".

I simply reported exactly what I was told. If Comcast has a few different models of the HD DVR then they should have said so. They said there are only two DVR's. One model for HD and one model for non-HD. When someone tells me there are "only two" it implies there are no others, anywhere.

Bicker1, do you work for Comcast? Is that why you are upset?

If my post offends you, as it appears it has, I apologize. But, then again your post has offended me. So I guess we are even.

Have a wonderful evening, Sir.

Anytime you assertion that you were lied to, without evidence of all of the necessary aspects of a lie, that's going to be a "wild accusation".

You went to a local office. The folks there are responsible for supporting the service that they provide, not the entirety of Comcast.

I never have worked for Comcast. I'm not upset. I'm disappointed that you'd cast reckless aspersions on folks who work for Comcast. I wouldn't want any of my customers doing that to me. I doubt you'd like anyone doing that to you.

Can we put this to bed now? I am sure there are more important things to talk about in here then this.

I believe we saw earlier that the February letters have gone out. Someone reported the Beverly and Danvers were transitioning them.

I'm a bit surprised that I haven't gotten any follow-up information yet. It's already September, and we're coming close to six weeks prior to the transition, here, and still I've seen nothing since the original letter.

Can I just go to the office with my old one and tell them I want the new one ? Do I have to make up a story about my dvr not working ? Well it does have some glitches sometimes....

Nah. A Comcast person would snow you under with flowery nothingness. You'll never get reality from a company person.

You don't have to tell them anything special. I didn't even bring the old one in yet as my wife still has a couple of recordings to offload.

So I got this letter in the mail the other day. I figure you guys would be interested. The original letter said Sept. 22, so they pushed it back a week. Sorry about the image quality, I only have a digital camera and I was trying to compromise between size and readability. Click full size under the pic to the right.

I got a letter similar to that but with a date of January 5, 2010

By the way I live in Somerville

The reason why the office said there are two types is because there are only 2 different types of DVR you can request HD or Non-HD. You cannot request specific models of HD DVRs because they get what they get from the warehouse, they do not order by model #. If they never get that box from the warehouse then they cannot provide it to you, so no point in making promises that cannot be kept.

Your kidding right ? Please read back about 10 pages. You will need to use DTA devices to get extended basic if you had the cable connected directly into the TV. You will get many more HD channels after the conversion.
