Yes I joined just to post this. I found the forum by googling "comcast boston cbs hd" because I was so goddamn sure I must just be missing it somehow. I'm a lowest tier Comcast tv customer, I really only took the package because it made the overall price of the internet service cheaper.
I also got no notice of the switchover until a mysterious Comcast box arrived unsolicited containing a DTA. I actually didn't open it for ages since I thought it must be my roommates or something as I wasn't expecting anything from them. Anyways they shut it off today so I hooked it up after work. First I couldn't get the goddamn thing working even after going through the online activation process. I called the "automated activation line" which took me to the main goddamn menu. It couldn't understand a word I said because apparently the system isn't geared for accents so it informed me I'd be transferred to a rep. Good, right? No, in a final note of accent irony I'm informed by an Australian woman, yes sweet mary, a random Australian voice, that simply said "We are experiencing very high call volumes please call again later" and disconnected me. I can't explain it but something in the intonation made me feel like she disliked me personally.
I decide to try the last option and get on the chat service where I'm connected to a nice man named Baniya who has impeccable spelling but worrisome grammar. He has to tell me how he needs my permission so he can offer me a professional evaluation of my current service plan and see if he can offer me money saving values and bonuses. I accede because lets just get on with it. After a couple minutes of pleasant greetings he starts going through my info. At the same time my call gets picked up (I called back while waiting for the chat to load and got into the call queue) by a bored American named Tyler. Tyler confirms he'll be quicker than the India rep so I ask him to hang on while I tell Baniya nevermind, I got someone on the phone. We go through the polite goodbye, Tyler sounds fine just hanging around. Finally Tyler starts going through my info, when I notice Baniya mentioned he'd sent something to my box that apparently just started working because the crappiest picture in the world comes on the tv. Now I apologize to Tyler for wasting his time and try to catch the end of Jeopardy.
Good old CBS4 didn't look so good anymore. Between Jeopardy rounds I starting trying to find the HD local channels. I could go through everything, most of it with the "not in your package you cheapo *******" message, yet I couldn't find any of my local channels in HD. Now I'm no visual snob. I enjoy a clean picture every now and then but my tv is an open box special. It's not that I need the HD, it's just that the standard channel looks like monkey ****. It looks compressed to within an inch of its life. You can practically see it begging for mercy. It's crap, y'know?
Funny thing is, I can browse through all the channels, no matter how far out of my tier. They're not available, but they're there. Everything but the low 800's, the only channels I want, the ones I was searching for. Just skips right over that entire batch like the numbers fell out of existence and now we simply pretend 907 comes shortly after 797. What the hell?
I'd assume it was simply a case of the DTA box not actually having the ability to transmit HD channels if not for the fact that I'm simply unable to access the channel itself. That pushes it towards malicious intent, in my mind, so it's not even a matter of me being able to add my own digital receiver. I'd use an antenna but my building won't let us add them to the roof and this is Allston, it's too crowded to pick up decent OTA signals.
