And...as I understand it, the higher the gain, the higher perceived contrast. Shouldn't a higher gain produce both deeper blacks and brighter whites?

mech, you mounted your samples almost exactly like I plan to mount mine.
Oh--something else, my shelf-mounted IN72 is about 5' from the floor. Not sure if this is far enough "off the ceiling" to be considered a retro-reflective setup...
