Total Noob Question

Hi all,
Been lurking on the site for a while trying to learn and am very impressed with the amount of knowledge available on the site. Hopefully, this is not in the wrong section, but I have a quick question. I'm trying to hook up my digital cable to my receiver (Sony Str de-935) via digital coax. However, when the I connect the coax to my receiver, I still can't get sound. I think it is because the only digital coax input on my receiver is listed as DVD/LD. Is there a way to have my dvd player hooked up through an optical cable and also have the cable come through via the coax? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

Most receivers let you select the input you want the digital inputs to "tie" in with. You want to check your setup page and set the coaxial to the input where you have the cable and set the optical to DVD/LD.
