Surround sound thru Digital Optical on Panny 50px60u?

Just got my new Onkyo 604 A/V Receiver and am curious about surround sound when watching tv. Does anybody know if I feed the Digital Optical from the tv to the Digital Optical in my reciever this will give me full 5.1 surround sound, or will it just give me good ol' stereo? Or, is it a must to feed the audio out to the receiver's audio in to do this?

Mind you, my tv is via a direct cable coaxial feed that my building supplies. No box.

Without an STB, it will work fine.
I can verify that.

Sorry for the ignorance, but, what is an STB? I'm guessing Set Top Box?

Are you doing the same thing and it works?

Yes, from my TV's optical out to my Onkyo receiver and works great.
That can NOT be said about DvD HDMI passthru.
I use optical direct to receiver for that.
That is why I say the 'Set Top Box' might have issues.

My Super Bowl party plans are now set and you, my friend, are invited.
