Looking for an antenna recommendation

I'm looking for a recommendation on an antenna.

Here is the report from AntennaWeb for my location:

Code:
*       yellow - uhf    WDIV-DT 4.1     NBC     DETROIT MI              21°     14.4    45
*       yellow - uhf    WJBK-DT 2.1     FOX     DETROIT MI              21°     12.7    58
*       yellow - uhf    WTVS-DT 56.1    PBS     DETROIT MI              32°     12.6    43
*       yellow - uhf    WXYZ-DT 7.1     ABC     DETROIT MI              13°     13.0    41
*       yellow - uhf    WWJ-DT  62.1    CBS     DETROIT MI              32°     12.6    44
*       yellow - uhf    WMYD-DT 20.1    MNT     DETROIT MI              32°     12.6    21
*       yellow - uhf    WKBD-DT 50.1    CW      DETROIT MI              359°    14.0    14
I've tried two small tabletop ones, one amplied, one not -- and between the two, I've gotten all of my local OTA HD stations.

The first antenna that I tried was a small little RCA UHF / VHF antenna that I paid $12.99 for at Target. With this antenna, I was able to pickup channels 50.1 (CW) and 20.1 (MNT).

I returned that antenna, and picked up another RCA that had a built in '55db' amp ($27.99 at Walmart). With this antenna, I was able to pickup all of the HD locals EXCEPT for 20.1 and 50.1 -- not really sure why that was. Neither of those was ever planned to be me my 'end game' antenna. I was just playing around to see what the signal was like in my area. It appears that I'm within 15 miles of everything, and the stations are within 34 degrees of ARC from each other. A friend of mine, who actually lives about 10 miles further away from the stations than I do, recommend the Radio Shack UHF Dual HDTV Indoor Antenna - 2-bay double bowtie indoor UHF antenna. I contacted my local Rat Shack and this item has been discontinued.

I'd like to do an attic installation; I have a small 3 bedroom brick bungalow. I'm looking at the CM4221 or CM4228. Not sure if I would need a booster as well.

Any thoughts / feedback?

Thanks.

You are only 12 to 14 miles from the broadcast towers which are spread around 33 degrees in azimuth. The Channel Master 4221 4 bay would be the better choice over the long range and very directional Cm 4228. The CM 4221 is an easier fit into an attic as well. I get stations out to 40 to 50 miles with a CM 4221 in my attic.

The one caveat is that WJBK-DT Fox 2, currently broadcasting on UHF 58, will be switching it's digital broadcast to VHF 7 after the analog shutdown in February, 2009. The FCC database for the post shutdown digital channel selection shows that all the other Detroit stations will stay at UHF. Based on my experience with a Cm 4221 for an analog channels 7 & 9 at 16 miles, that at 12 miles, the odds are pretty good that the CM 4221 will be able to receive WJBK-DT when it switches to VHF 7 in 2009, but can't guarantee this. You just need to be prepared to add a small upper VHF antenna such as the Winegard YA-6713 in 2009 which should not be hard to do with an attic mount.

I would get just the antenna first and hold off on a buying a pre-amp. Put up the antenna and see what you can get. Unless you have a very long cable run, you probably will not need a pre-amp.

The Channel masters are great antenna's too. I have a 4228 and I have terrible multipath and get my stations between 80-100%. And thats in my attic. Go for it!
