Samsung hl-s5087w question ??

Hi everyone ... Well I am on my third Samsung hl-s5087w 1080p TV, and this one seems to be working great except for one thing.

On componet I can set my 360 to 720p and 1080p just fine, but on VGA only 1080p will work fine. See I can not use the P.SIZE button in 720p to take away the black around the edges, it just wont let me. My last TV let me, does anyone know why I can not adjust this, I can do it just fine in 1080p.

If I can not get this to work I guess I will just get the 46in 1080p lcd from samsung.

Thanks for any help.

Just keep your 360 in 1080p resolution...I do and have not seen a performance hit. I don't see the point in outputting 720p when the TV is going to upscale it to 1080p regardless.

Why would you want to do this? You can also go into the user menu of the set and go into the PC menu and set the size of the screen that way. Also being able to change two other settings that I forgot the names of. But I would just leave it in 1080p why do you want 720p?

My point is i paid alot for the TV and I can't even set it to 720p on VGA without black bars ... Weird, it's that I wan't to run in it in 720p but like I said I paid alot of money, so I was hoping it worked right.

When it is set to 1080p I can go to the user menu and than go to the PC menu, but when it is set to 720p I can't even go to the PC menu ... It's like it doesnt think its connected to VGA or something. Any ideas ??

Sorry about your problem. I can't offer any advice, but I'd like to ask a question.

What problems have you had with the previous 2 Samsung hl-s5087w? I am considering purchasing one myself in the future, but this doesn't sound too good.

Well first I had the 720p Hls model, but the sound went out after about two weeks, and the picture the same day ... I returned it and upgraded to the 1080p model, sound started going out but it would come back, and I was playing Tony Hawk project 8 and than all of a sudden the tv makes a loud noise and shuts off, so I wait about 15 mins. before I turn it back on to continue playing, and than all of a sudden 10 mins. later it shuts off again, and it kept doing that so I returned it.

And now this TV is giving me the issue I have stated in this thread, and it seems that I am seeing the Rainbow effect but only on poor quality standard channels.

If he is going to return this one because it won't run 720p VGA even though it will run 1080P VGA and 1080P Component (which by the way are the ones you would want to use anyway since it is the native resolution of the display) then who knows why the first two were returned. I personally have the Hl-s6187w and love it to death...It has been a perfect TV for me for both the Xbox 360+HD-DVD running 1080p/1080i over component and for the PS3 running 1080p over HDMI. I do not think you will be disappointed with the set.

I returned the TV's because they had problems, yes I want to run in 1080p but 720p is a option that the TV should function correctly in, I love the TV it just seems that I am very unlucky in getting one that works right. I was not saying the TV was a bad TV, I was just saying that I have problems with my set. When you pay this kiond of money for a TV it should work 100% correct ... I dont just go drop 2 grand and just settle if something doesnt work ... I make sure to get it fixed.

If I owned a Subaru STi (if only) and it had turbo lag at 2000 rpm I'd be bummed but I wouldn't care too much after it got into its prime...same with TV. VGA is a computer connection and Samsung handles better than most TV brands. I just don't see returning a product that works perfectly for how you are going to use it. I have a downhill mountain bike that bobs like crazy when trying to pedal it on the flats or anything uphill...far from perfect...but when you put it in its element its bliss (chairlift and 2500ft of vertical to decend). I equate that to an HDTV as well. 480i cable looks like **** on a big 1080p TV...we all know that. But 1080i football, Crank on Bluray, or Corpse Bride/King Kong on HD-DVD almost brings a tear to your eye. I am still amazed almost every night. I do understand your point though...I'm just being an ass

I know someone was having the VERY same problem as you (not being able to adjust the screen) after some time they found that they were pressing the wrong button)

I am having trouble understanding what you are meaning by 720p over VGA. What actually resolution are you setting it to in the 360 dash board? Is it 1280 x 720?
I just put the 360 on 1920 x 1080 use the p-size button. Then I change the 360 resolution to the 1280 x 720 and navigated to setup - PC - position and proceeded to move the image around and use the p-size button. And even when I select the latter resolution I really could tell the difference unless I played some HD material. So if you are looking at the menu and do not see the black border in 1920 x 1080 (because you used you p-size button) and then switch to 1280 x 720 and see black bars then there is a problem. That should not happen.

I did all of that, when the 360 is set to 720p, it will not let me use P.SIZE, it won't even let me go to PC in the user menu. When the 360 is set to 1080p I have no problems and the user menu does not gray out the PC function like it does for 720p.

Are you ever actually going to use 720p from the Xbox 360?

I have the HLS6187 it is the only tv to get for the xbox 360 hands down nothing else comes close.

Anyone who talks about 720p and vga settings i am calling out as not even having VGA hooked up.

Everyone who has VGA knows that there is no option for 720p when you hook up VGA. It all switched to numerical formats like 1080x1920.

I am calling out this guy as not even having a VGA connection hooked up.

I personally leave my VGA port open for my laptop so that I can watch KIMBO fights from youtube on the big screen! A much better use of the port than using it to input 1280X720 on a 1080p television from a device that can output 1080p over component.

Thats exactly what I said. I think he failed to realize what I was asking him. I would like to know if he is referring to 1280 x 720 when he is talking about 720p. I don't think he knows what he is talking about because he refuses to be clear.

It can also be the case that he is referring to component as VGA. Which will make me roll over and cry.

I'm gonna go hook up my component cables and set it to 720p and 1080p and use the p-size button to confirm this. Be right back.

First off I know what the hell I am talking about, 1280x720 would be 720p in VGA terms ... I have it hooked up to VGA, can't be much more clear than that.

It will let me set my 360 at 1080x1920, when I do this i had black bars, so I adjusted them, they went away. I am not sure I can dumb it down anymore for you.

Alright I set my 360 to 1280x720 *720p* I try to adjust the black bars that show up, it won't let me. I go to user menu and the PC setting is BLACKED OUT. Again I am not sure I can dumb it down for you anymore than this.

My point was to see if anyone knew why it was not letting my adjust the with the P.SIZE button, why there are black bars that will not go away while the 360 is outputting 1280x720 *720p* .... But it seems that no one knows the answer to my question. I am using VGA not componet, not composite ...

I also will be playing my 360 in 1080x1920, but all I wanted to know is why my TV won't display 1280x720 right ... You would know this if you read my whole post, the TV is to expensive not to function correctly.

Man he's luck I can't find my remote to press the p-size button while using component. But you can't go to PC in either 1080p or 720p so scratch that argument.

I'll tell you this. Once you have had black bars in1080 and you fix it. You should not see black bars when you change to 720. Doesn't happen to me or a friend of mine that I asked to do so.

Dude I am not using component ... I am using *VGA* hahaha and yes when I have my 360 set to 1080x1920 I can go into the user menu and go to PC settings. When I set my 360 to 1280x720 I cant go to PC menu for some reason, but regardless on VGA I can go to the PC menu when 360 is set to 1920x1080

Return the set.

TV: " Use me to my full abilities. Take advantage of me. Don't settle for 720p."

Well on my last TV same model I had, I had to return cause sound kept going out, and it was randomly shutting off. I set it to 1920x1080 and had to use P.SIZE button and fixed the black bars, I than set 360 to 1280x720 and had to use P.SIZE button and it stayed that way.

That was my last TV, just need to be clear for some of the folks here.
