Omnimic for ~$300-350, self-contained with a reasonably low learning curve. REW for ~$100-150 in cables, mic and sound card, more difficult to set up, with a fairly steep learning curve. XTZ, which I know little about.

Another vote for OmniMic... very easy to get started, good support on AVS, easy to use, does more or less everything I can ever envisage needing. Also I could not have discovered and resolved the phase problem with my subs if I hadn't had OmniMic - well I might have discovered it but I doubt if I coud have resolved it...

No OS/X support unfortunately. I had to buy a cheap but useful Windows lappy to run OmniMic and Audyssey Pro. A secondhand lappy would do - as you say, it isn’t especially demanding of the system it runs on.

Yup - it definitely works perfectly with W7 - that's what came with my cheap lappy - Home version, whatever that is. Fve minutes after opening the box, you're measuring!

As for operating systems, I think that OSX is superior in some ways, it's Apple hardware that I don't care for. I did use an iMac exclusively for 3 years a while back so I am familiar with it. If Windows 8 becomes dominant I could very well go back to Macs. Win 8 is a total disaster for the desktop.

I downloaded the latest version of Omnimic's software a week or so ago. It does run without problems, except of course it detects that there is no omnimic attached. It looks like its very well done and easier to use than REW.

Yes, OmniMic is way easier than REW. I took one look at REW (it runs on a Mac) and gave up on it right away - I just don't have the computer-type knowledge needed. I am sure REW is a fantastic tool though for those who can master it. But I am happy with my OM.
IKWYM wrt to OS/X vs Windows. I find OS/X far more robust, possibly also because Apple have control over both the OS and the hardware. Main thing I have against the hardware is that it is very expensive with the cheapest Mac laptop coming in at three times the price of the cheapest Windows laptop - but HST, the quality of the Mac lappy is going to be way higher than the cheap Windows lappy. I guess it's just preference at the end of the day - I got too frustrated with XP letting me down all the time and wanted something more robust, hence my switch to Macs.

The best thing is, you will be taking measurements within 5 minutes of opening the package! Of course, you then have to learn a) what measurements to take and b) how to interpret them - but that is also true of REW which is far more difficult to get working in the first place. Plenty of OM help on AVS too.

The OmniMic kit is a self contained measuring system and does not replace the Audyssey Mic. Typically, you would run OmniMic after Audyssey to check how well it performed and to tune elements like sub distance to improve integration between the subs and mains.
It doesn't work on a Mac

No ****in' way - but thanks for asking! The F2s have been in the UK since last Thursday and are still sitting in a Customs shed at the airport 90 miles away 'waiting clearance'. To say I am frustrated is to truly understand the meaning of understatement ;) Mark Seaton has promised to chase Fedex for me at the US end to see if they can get them moving and I am waiting on the result of their conversation with Fedex. I have now given up any hope of having them here before next week.

It's become much more complicated. Customs seem to believe that I am an Importer (a business) and have asked for various paperwork which I am unable to provide. They will not release the F2s without this. I think that there may have been a problem at the US end as Fedex went back to Seaton Sound and asked for additional documentation, which SS have never been asked to provide before. I suspect this is why Customs here think I am a business importing goods from the US. As I am now embroiled with a UK government department, I fear the subs will never be released! Fedex cannot help because they have been told by Customs that they cannot release the goods to Fedex for delivery without the paperwork (which I am unable to provide). I have also been asked to prepay the duty and tax, which has never happened before - Fedex usually invoice for it after delivery. IOW, a mess.
To make matters worse, I have sold my existing subs and they will be collected next week, so I will be subless unless this gets sorted soon, which I doubt. Ho hum...
