Good afternoon all,
I just received my Onkyo TX-NR818 several days ago and I've tried to run audyssey at least 20 times with no luck.
It plays several pulses out of the front left speaker and then measures ambient noise. Then it reports the ambient noise is too high. It only plays the chirps once and does not attempt to raise the volume of the chirps and try again. It just stops after the first one and reports high ambient noise.
Originally this was in silent room with only the fridge making a very very low hum. I waited for it to go off and retried with same results.
On a separate day I tried removing power from all electronics in the room except for the receiver and tv. Even shut off all my Internet devices and cell phones. Fridge and all lights off. I'm in a very quiet neighborhood. I pulled out a tripod and mounted the mic this time.
Still same results. I can't figure out what is going on...the room is silent. Which actually led me to notice a very low buzz/hum coming from the 818 itself. It's not loud, but it is certainly noticeable from a couple feet away in a dead silent room.
I tried again on a third day with no luck again. The buzz/hum from the unit seems to be less audible this time. A reply in the TX-NR818 thread mentioned they did not have a hum but that it may be a fan. I'm planning on checking the unit to see if I can tell if there is a fan internally.
Hi - I read of your problems with the 818 in the 818 thread. Sorry you are having trouble. It would seem to me that your AVR is faulty. It should not 'buzz' and buzzing is totally different to fan noise. And if the 818 is like any of the Onkyos I have had, the fans only cut in when the unit gets very warm anyway.
There is a FAQ answer on ambient noise, but it can't help if the unit is faulty - have a look anyway.
