I think some here are Fred, they're just not saying it. Who is the best is really just an opinion anyway. Freddy Murcury was an unbelieveable singer and showman, but some guy who has the entire catalog of Tony Bennett and Liza Minelli may think he's a hack just because he didn't sing jazz standards from the 50's.

Remember the thread title isn't "best players in rock".
Although many feel that the best players would make the best band, I am not one of them.
I was only pointing out that players in bands with some, (probably record company promo geek's), label of 'best R&R band' didn't seem to make many peoples cuts. Not saying that anyone is wrong. I just found it interesting.

Just consider bands not represented here, that at various points were, (or still are), considered 'the best' by some. (BTW, not necessarily my personal list)
The Kinks, The Who, The Rolling Stones, U2, Aerosmith, Metalica, Van Halen, The Eagles, The Greatful Dead, The Allman Brothers Band,

The Travelling Wilburys.......

"Charlie Watts also is nowhere near what I consider a great drummer,"

He's better than a great drummer, he's a perfect one.

For the Stones, yeah I guess. Not sure I'd want to see him play for Judas Priest.

The problem is though that band chemistry is ineffable. We know in hindsight that those four particular guys in The Who made a perfect combination but as it turns out, putting Jimmy Page, Chris Squire and Alan White together in a room (the unheard band XYZ; aka eX Yes Zeppelin) totally fizzed even though it looks good on paper. But all we can do is say well, these guys play great and they might totally rock together. Otherwise then yes, technically the truly great bands are the ones that actually exist and we know are great.

BTW to me Joey Kramer is one of the great rock drummers. Always solid, always interesting. Put him and Daisley together and you would have a hell of a rhythm section. Never cared for Charlie Watts; I prefer Ringo but of course it' all personal taste.

I remember XYZ. They came along a bit late and didn't sound very comercial.

That's a bad thing?

Not at all:

A little bird has whispered in my ear that these recordings might be a little less hard to find at some point in the future...

The greatest R&R Band ever is The Stones.
The greatest Rock Band ever is Led Zep.
The greatest Rock Music Genius ever is Hendrix.

So, there you are sports-fans...that puts this thread to rest.
