In some cases, you are right. IF they only want to watch one display at a time, and if the switching has no active electronics in the signal path. Some very basic, and some very high end switchers are built that way. Mechanical switchers usually meet that criteria, as are some electrical relay switched switchers.
So yes, you're sort of right
But a switch can't duplicate a signal to two places at once.
